Florence (Schrage) Ferris Obituary
BATTENVILLE - Florence Schrage Ferris died Wednesday, March 6, 2013, at her home in Battenville.
She was born March 10, 1923, in Howells, Neb. Her parents, John and Frances Schrage, were farmers who also had property in the Rio Grande Valley of Texas. At the age of 11, she moved with her family to Texas and considered herself a Texan transplanted to New York. She grew up riding and was an accomplished equestrienne into her adult life.
During World War II, she worked for the U.S. Department of Defense in Washington, D.C., and for the Army Air Corps in Texas. Following the war, she moved to New York City.
In New York, she had a career as a high-fashion model. She met and married Marvin C. Ferris, a native New Yorker, while working in the city. They were married for 62 years, residing in Croton-on-Hudson, N.Y., and then moving to Greenwich, where they started a paper business. She was an officer of Bio-Tech Corp., together with her husband, Marvin.
She was predeceased by her husband, who died in June of 2012, and a grandson, Marvin Cobb Richardson.
She is survived by her children, John Ferris of Battenville and Jane Ferris Richardson of New Bedford, Mass.; and three grandchildren, Thomas Ferris of Glacier, Wash., Jeremy Ferris of Providence, R.I., and Gabriel Richardson of New Bedford, Mass.
Services will be private.
