Jim Urell Greenfield Center - Jim Urell, formally of Brooklyn N.Y. and Greenfield Ctr., passed away on July 2, 2012 at Homewood Residence, Cleveland Park in Greenville S.C. He had just celebrated his 89th birthday on June 28th. Born in Brooklyn, his love of horses and the area brought him and his family to Saratoga in the summer of 1968. Shortly after their arrival they settled in Greenfield Ctr. Jim was honorably discharged from the USMC in 1945 after serving 4-years of active duty in WWII. He was then employed as Food & Beverage Manager of the Gideon Putnam Hotel for many years and then sent to Dallas, TX, to open the luxurious Registry Hotel, which engaged the musical talents of Willie Nelson and Maureen McGovern for the Grand Opening. Through the years, Jim owned and trained horses, some standard-bred, racing them at Saratoga and Pompano Park in the winter months. It was what he loved most, that and having his family travel with him. Predeceased by his beautiful stepdaughter Leslie Donovan and wonderful son-in laws Paul Szot and Sergio Cuevas. His survivors include: his loving wife Evelyn and seven children, Ken (Susan), Dyanne (John), Dennis (Patty), Lynne, James, Jr. (Trish), Janice (David) and Scott, and several grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Memorial Services will be private at the convenience of the family. He will be buried at the Gerald B.H. Solomon Cemetery.
