John E. Sherin Obituary
John E. SherinGREENWICH - John Edward Sherin, 91, a lifelong resident of Greenwich passed away Thursday, January 4, 2018 at Saratoga Hospital surrounded by his loving family. He was born April 14, 1926 in Cambridge, NY to the late Thomas and Eunice O'Donnell Sherin.John grew up and spent his whole life in Greenwich, attending Greenwich Central School and graduated 3rd in his class in 1944. As a young boy he went fishing daily with the Bleeker Street Boys, and always dreamed of being a pilot. Upon graduation and with World War II in full swing, John was inducted into the U.S. Army Air Corps in 1944. He was ineligible for pilot training because of a lack of perfect vision in one eye, but still qualified for combat crew service. After ball turret armor and radio operator school he was assigned to a B-29 in the Pacific, at which time the atomic bomb ended the war in Japan. John was declared free from combat but volunteered for service in the European sector. In Europe, John was assigned to a C-47 crew that flew military personnel throughout Europe. One of his greatest trips was carrying Russian diplomats to the first allied conference all while flying through Russian controlled airspace. His passion to become a pilot was fulfilled in 1961 when he got his pilot's license. He flew for over 40 years, building two home-built experimental airplanes, and owning and modifying several others. In 1946 he was discharged from service and moved back to Greenwich. He went to work as a draftsman for the Eddy Plow Company, General Electric, Niagara Mohawk, and eventually became a foreman for NY Telephone Company in Saratoga Springs where he retired in 1985.John married the love of his life Jeannette O'Malley in 1951 and they built a home in Greenwich where they lived until her passing in 1986. They had 3 children. John married his second wife Ardis (Anderson) Sherin in 1990 and they traveled the world with Bob (Pinky) and Virginia Griffen and many other friends visiting all the Caribbean, Hawaii, Europe, North Africa, South America, Mexico and Alaska. In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his wives, Jeannette O'Malley Sherin and Ardis Anderson Sherin, and brother William Sherin. He is survived by his sister Mary Van Schaick; children Michael (Colleen) Sherin, Michele Jordan (Greg Northrup), David (Starra) Sherin; grandchildren Chad (Amanda) Sherin, Devin Sherin, Timothy (Lluvia) Jordan, Travis (Danielle) Jordan, Jillian Jordan, Abigail Sherin, Zion Sherin, and Micah Sherin; great-grandchildren Patrick Jordan, Tessa Jordan, Zoe Jordan, Harper Jordan, and Connor Sherin; step-daughters Darcey Peruzzotti and Holly O'Hern; step grandchildren and step great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.A mass of a Christian burial will be held at 12:30 pm Saturday, January 13, 2018 at St. Joseph's Roman Catholic Church, Greenwich, NY with the Rev.
