Joyce Lampert Obituary

SARATOGA SPRINGS - Joyce Ann (Wolcott) Lampert passed away Thursday, May 23, 2013, from complications of Alzheimer's disease.
Joyce was born June 11, 1924, in Saratoga Springs, N.Y., the second-youngest of 12 Wolcott children.
She was predeceased by her eight sisters and two of her three brothers.
She is survived by her brother, Willard Wolcott, his wife, Eileen, and their children of Rome, N.Y.
Joyce is also survived by her five children: a daughter, Esther Sue (Lampert) Helvig, her husband, Dave Helvig, and their four children, Jeff Helvig, Tony Helvig, Matt Helvig and Mary (Helvig) Stumpf of Mandan, N.D.; her oldest son, Norman Lampert, his former wife, Cindy, and their two sons, Justin Lampert and Travis Lampert of Atlanta, Ga.; middle son, Toby Lampert, and his wife, Jennifer Meehl, of Saxtons River, Vt., his former wife, Ginger Donohue of Hudson Falls, and their son, Sean Lampert, his wife, Song Bin, and their two children, Hyun-Sun and Petal; her youngest son, Jeffrey R. Lampert, his daughter, Morgan (Lampert) Lansing, her husband, Chris, and their children, Orion and Reyna; her stepdaughter, Tara Quain, her mother Jane Husted, wife Colleen (Murphy) Lampert and stepdaughter Keeley Higgins; and her youngest daughter, Heidi Lampert, and partner Mary Vetter of Porter Corners.
Joyce is also survived by many nieces and nephews of her vast extended family.
Joyce attended Saratoga Springs public schools, graduating with the class of 1943. She was an avid participant in all activities at school, excelling in sports and music. Joyce remained close to her classmates for all of her life, serving several times as co-chair of reunion committees.
As a member of the Greatest Generation, she spent her junior and senior years of high school working the second shift at General Electric as ""Rosie the Riveter,"" running a drill press and a turret lathe for the war effort. Her story was featured in the book ""103 Rosie the Riveter Stories,"" published in 2001.
Shortly after graduating from high school in June of 1943, Joyce enlisted in the SPARS, which was the women's division of the U.S. Coast Guard organized during wartime to free men for the front lines. She was stationed in Florida until the end of the war, where she was attached to a transportation company, often driving large delivery trucks and small jeeps. She occasionally had to change a flat tire on the large trucks, and at 5 feet, 2 inches, the tires were often taller than she was.
She married William Lampert of Brooklyn on March 3, 1946. Bill was a severely wounded World War II veteran and the match was not a good one. Joyce said her five children were the only good thing to come out of that marriage.
She spent most of the rest of her life following the exploits of her children and grandchildren, hauling around countless ""brag books"" of photos to regale her friends.
As a young mother, she served as a Cub Scout den mother, provided many thematically decorated birthday cakes to neighborhood children as well as her own children, made many of her children's clothes, provided Halloween costumes to the neighborhood and provided a ready cheering section for her children's sports teams. She also played marches for her kids on the trumpet when they were small, and she could be relied upon to teach basic baseball skills to anyone willing to learn.
Joyce worked at VanRaalte's in the 1950s and seasonally for JJ Newberry. For much of her working life, she made custom clothing, including several wedding gowns, and provided sewing and alteration services. She also worked for a number of years for General Foods in the container factory.
Although her primary focus was always her family, she was an avid golfer for many years. She very much enjoyed playing mini golf and nephew Mike Murphy's golf range on Route 9. She also enjoyed collecting golf balls from the woods around the country club.
A memorial service will be held from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Tuesday, May 28, 2013, at Tunison Funeral Home in Saratoga Springs and will be followed by interment of her ashes at 2 p.m. at Gerald B.H. Solomon-Saratoga National Cemetery in Schuylerville.
Donations in Joyce's memory may be sent to The Fort Hudson Health System, 319 Broadway, Fort Edward, NY 12828, with a note to direct the donation to Activities for Residents.
Online remembrances may be made at www.tunisonfuneralhome.com.

Not sure what to say?

Dear Toby, Jeff and Heidi, I was saddened to hear of your mom's passing. I have many wonderful memories of her from just being such a great person to talk to, her love of just simple fun, as well as some great road trips. She was like a mother to me for a while. She'll be missed but I do know that she made the most of life for as long as she could. She was a special lady. My thoughts and prayers are with you all.
