Mary Marsicano Obituary

Mary Marsicano, SARATOGA SPRINGS- Mary Marsicano, of Saratoga Springs and formerly of Greenwich and New York City, passed away suddenly at her home on February 20, 2012. Born on May 22, 1938 in Troy, New York, Mary was the daughter of Benjamin Marsicano and Elizabeth Loeffler. She married James Catalfimo in 1957 and moved to Greenwich, New York, where she and Jim raised three children, Michael, David and Kimberly. In 1976, Mary returned to school, earning a Bachelors degree in Theater from Skidmore College and a Masters degree in Fine Arts from Bennington College. She then embarked on a long and rewarding career in the arts, which included work on Broadway as a star dresser for Linda Lavin, Valerie Harper, Rhea Perlman, George C. Scott, Tommy Tune, Glynis Johns, and other celebrity actors; in television as the costume coordinator for the 34th, 36th and 39th Annual Grammy Awards television shows, the CBS Morning News and the TV news magazine, Day and Date; in the classroom as an adjunct professor of Theatre at New York University and Kingsborough Community College; and in dozens of regional, summer stock, community and children's theatre productions as an actress, costume designer and wardrobe supervisor. In 2004, Mary relocated from Manhattan to Saratoga Springs to be closer to her family. Embracing her new home, she soon began a second career in politics and community service. She was elected to the Executive Board of the Saratoga Springs Democratic Committee, worked as a volunteer for Senator Kirsten Gillibrand when she served in the House of Representatives for the 20th Congressional District, and served as a Constituent Services Representative for Congressman Scott Murphy when he succeeded to Senator Gillibrand's seat in 2009. She also served on numerous civic committees and boards, including the Saratoga County Office for the Aging Advisory Council, Mayor Scott Johnson's Advisory Committee on Senior Issues, the Citizens Transportation Committee of Saratoga County, and the Auction Committee of the Saratoga Economic Opportunity Council. When not busy with politics and civic endeavors, Mary found time to garden (she was a member of the Katrina Trask Garden Club), play tennis, and author short stories, a novel, a screen play, and numerous poems (her poetry is published in The Mirror Looks Back and On Wings of Words, both found on Amazon.com). Although Mary filled her days with work, politics, community service and hobbies, she was, above all else, a devoted mother, grandmother, sister, aunt and mother-in-law to her family. She gave selflessly of herself, offering sage advice, wise counsel, understanding, enthusiasm, energy, time, creativity, fantastic cooking, fantastical stories, compassion, support and unconditional love to her family whenever and wherever it was needed. In a way that was uniquely her own, she brought to these endeavors-and to all else that she did in life-a passion and enthusiasm for living, and for people, which is now forever woven into the fabric of her family. Mary was cherished by countless friends and will be missed by all who knew and loved her. She will be most missed by her sons and daughters-in-law, Michael J. Catalfimo and Kristen Moy, of Saratoga Springs, and David J. Catalfimo and Nicole Daniel, of Montecito, CA; her daughter, Kimberly A. Catalfimo, of Watervliet, NY; her twin sister, Jane Smith, and her husband, James Smith, of Palm Beach Garden, FL; her brother, Jerry Marsicano, of Saratoga Springs, NY; her three grandchildren, Grace Ann Catalfimo, James Daniel Catalfimo, and Ella Robb Catalfimo; her niece, Laura (Smith) Giraldez, and nephew, Michael Smith; and her former spouse, James A. Catalfimo. A private burial will take place in the family plot at St. Mary's Cemetery in Troy, NY. A celebration of Mary's life will be held the weekend of March 17-18, 2012. Arrangements are pending, and additional information can be obtained by contacting the Tunison Funeral Home, 105 Lake Avenue, Saratoga Springs, NY 12866. Memorial donations can be made in Mary's name to the Lake Avenue Drama Club, c/o Dr. Barbara Messier, 126 Lake Avenue, Saratoga Springs, NY. For online remembrances: www.tunisonfuneralhome.com.

The first time I met Mary was during the ACT Christmas show. She was the sweetest costume designer I had ever worked with. She was able to light up a room when she walked in. Even though I was only able to work with Mary once, I'll never forget the hundreds of costumes she had, the stories she told, and her lucky apron we would use backstage. You were a sweet lady with a passion for making every cast member feel special. I love and miss you, Mary.

Thank you Mary for the wonderful time we spent at ACT rehearsals...I enjoyed our chats while I simply sewed on buttons and you made magic as you saw to it that all the childrens' costumes were perfect. The angels in heaven will be well dressed with you at their sides.

I have known Mary for several years. I will always remember her as the fairy godmother to all children. I hired her as costumer for several of our shows in Glens Falls with Adirondack Children's troupe. She always turned each child into Cinderella or a prince. It wasn't just the leads that she made feel and look special, ALL the children she had dressed to perfection. She was also a good friend. She was there for me during my husband's illness and also stayed close to me after he died. She was a special soul. My heart and love go out to her family. She loved you all so much!!! Mariesa Kreis

Dear Jane and Jerry,
I spent only a few hours with Mary by your parents' pool on hot summer days, but even as a cynical kid I was struck by her vitality and very positive outlook. I was very intrigued by her enthusiasm and energy. A fascinating "older woman". May God's peace comfort you.

Mary Marsicano was one of the treasures of Saratoga Springs. Her presence everywhere was always uplifting and inspiring - and always so positive. Seldom does a person make such an unforgettable impact on us. Her kindness and enormous contributions are felt everywhere but, most especially, they will live forever in the hearts and minds of the many thousands of children who were fortunate to know her, work with her and share her love of theater and life.

Passionate is the most perfect word to describe Mary, for this is the way she approached the things and people in life who were important to her. She will be missed by all who knew her. My deepest sympathies to her family.

I met Mary online, where we shared our writing and our love of our families, as well as our political opinions, for years. I learned so much from her about the experience of growing up and living in her time and place, and also just about living intensely and wiht spirit. Peace to all who miss her tonight.

Mary was very much involved in the Saratoga Democratic Party and was my campaign manager in 2007. She also Co-Founded, with me, the Citizens Transportation Committee of Saratoga County. She was very generous with her time for others and was very thoughtful. Rest in peace Mary and may peace be with your family and loved ones.

What a wonderful and remarkable woman she was, 'reinventing' herself as she carved out a truly satisfying life. A role model for many, and a strong voice for women. May her memory be for a blessing.

I first 'met' Mary online through our long lasting/ still continuing internet group; but then met her in person several times as well. One of my fondest memories was eating with her and a few other friends at the Windows of the World Restaurant. She also gave us a tour of the television studio in NYC, and at another time saw the Broadway play she was 'dresser' for and had an opportunity to meet the stars. Mary was a member of our online writing group as well for a while, as she was working on her play. She always spoke so lovingly of her grandchildren. My condolences to her children and grandchildren.
