Newman W. (Gil) Gilchrist Rome, NY - Newman W. (Gil) Gilchrist, 70, passed away Monday, October 21, 2013 at Rome Memorial Hospital. Born on January 11, 1943 in Pell City, AL, he was the son of Margie (Davis) and Walter Gilchrist. Newman was a 1961 graduate of Ashville (AL) High School. Following graduation, he enlisted in the US Navy, serving as a nuclear reactor operator aboard the USS Theodore Roosevelt. He served from 1961 until 1968. On March 6, 1965 Newman was united in marriage with Karlene Hinderland in Saratoga Springs, NY. He was employed at several computer companies in the Utica area over the years, including Mohawk Data Sciences, ICL, SBM, Cogar and PAR Technologies. Survivors include his wife of 48 years, Karlene; his mother, Margie of Ashville, AL; a daughter and son-in-law, Maribeth and Sean Deery of Yorkville, NY; one grandson, Colin Deery; two sisters and one brother, Edna Smith, Gail Thompson and Charles Gilchrist, all of Alabama and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his father, Walter N. Gilchrist, and his sister-in-law, Dorothy Hinderland. Relatives and friends may call from 10 to 11am Friday, Oct. 25, 2013 at the William J. Burke & Sons/Bussing & Cunniff Funeral Homes, 628 North Broadway, Saratoga Springs (518-584-5373) with funeral services to follow at 11am officiated by the Rev. Neil Draves-Arpaia. Burial with military honors will be at 12:30pm at the Gerald B.H. Solomon Saratoga National Cemetery, Duell Rd., Schuylerville.
