James W. Tierney Saratoga Springs, NY - James W. Tierney, formerly of Dyer Switch Road, passed away Tuesday, July 29, 2014 at the Van Duyn Home and Hospital, Syracuse. He was 86. Born on June 12, 1928 in Syracuse, NY, he was a son of the late John and Mary M. (Peters) Tierney and was a 1947 graduate of Eastwood High School. A member of the NY State Army National Guard, he served with the 134th medical battalion and was honorably discharged as Captain in 1959. He was North East Regional Manager with Grand Union Supermarkets for twelve years prior to retiring in 1989. Jim later worked for St. Peter’s Hospital in Albany, NY retiring as head of Maintenance. A devoted member and faithful communicant of the Church of St. Peter in Saratoga Springs for many years, he regularly served as a Liturgical Coordinator, Eucharistic Minister and usher at the 7:30am Mass on Sunday. He enjoyed skiing and was a member of the Gore Mountain Ski Patrol, and as an avid runner, he participated in the Utica Boilermaker for over 29 years. Survivors include his loving wife of 62 years, Dolores M. (Cedrone) Tierney, whom he married on June 28, 1952 in St. John the Baptist Church, Syracuse; his daughter, Marie Dittmar of Manlius, NY; his son, John (Christine) Tierney of Baldwinsville; 7 grandchildren, Rhiannin, Nathan, Nicole, Ryan, Justin, James and Eion; 5 great-grandchildren, Joseph, Lucas, Callen, Oliver and Tristian, and his sister, Eileen McCrumb of Florida. A Mass of Christian Burial with Military Honors will be celebrated at 10am Saturday (Aug. 2, 2014) in the Church of St. Peter, 241 Broadway. Burial will follow in St. Peter’s Cemetery, West Ave. Contributions may be made to Hospice of CNY, 990 7th North St., Liverpool, NY 13088 or the Alzheimer’s Association of CNY, 441 W. Kirkpatrick St., Syracuse, NY 13204. Arrangements are under the direction of the William J. Burke & Sons/Bussing & Cunniff Funeral Homes of 628 North Broadway, Saratoga Springs 584-5373.
