Robert Fennell

Robert Homer Fennell, Sr. - SAVANNAH - Robert Homer Fennell, Sr., 97, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, October 31, 2012 after a brief illness. He was born on March 7, 1915 in Savannah and was the son of the late William Frank and Lilly Hood Fennell. He was also predeceased by seven sisters, a brother, a granddaughter, a son-in-law and his loving wife, Florence. Bob was a devoted and loving father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and uncle. He was also a faithful husband to his late wife, Florence for over 70 years and he has missed her so much since her death in March. After being raised in Bull Street Baptist Church, Bob became an active member of St Paul's Evangelical Lutheran Church for many years. He was a member of the Inquirers Sunday School Class, Men's Thursday work crew, Men in Mission and the Altar Guild. Bob was a graduate of Savannah High School where he ran cross country and was on the boxing team. He later coached the cross country team there and was a member of the Happy Geechees. As a teenager, Bob began raising and racing homing pigeons. This qualified him to become a member of the U.S. Army Signal Corps in WWII. Capt. Fennell served in the 285th Signal Pigeon Corps in England, France and Germany. He continued his hobby of racing pigeons until a few years ago. Bob retired as Superintendent of the Paper Processing Department of Union Camp after 42 years of service. He was also a member of the Mary Calder Golf Club. Bob was an active member of the Benedictine Athletic Association for many years where he served as President and was honored with several awards, including the Gold Medal of Excellence and the Man of the Year award. Bob and Florence enjoyed serving the school for 29 years running the concession stand at the BC gym. Bob was a member of the St. Patrick's Day Parade Committee and never missed a parade for many years. One of his greatest joys was being a member of the Savannah Quarterback Club where he served faithfully as Trainer. Survivors include two daughters, Halley F. Page of Athens, GA and Patty F. Cannady (Bill) of Savannah; three sons, Robert H. Fennell, Jr. (Sandra) and David W. Fennell (Dianne) both of Savannah, and Steven R. Fennell (Cathy) of Nashville, TN; 14 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren; one brother-in-law, Billy R. Catherwood of Michigan; and numerous nieces and nephews. Visitation will be held on Saturday, November 3 from 4:00 to 6:00 at Fox and Weeks, Hodgson Chapel, with the funeral to take place on Sunday, November 4 at 2:00 at St. Paul's Lutheran Church, 10 West 31st Street. Burial will follow in Bonaventure Cemetery. His grandsons will be the pallbearers and members of the Quarterback Club will serve as honorary pallbearers. Remembrances may be made in Bob's memory to St. Paul's Lutheran Church, Benedictine Military School Athletic Association or the Savannah Quarterback Club's scholarship fund.
