Rose Collins(1947 - 2014)

Sister Rose Mary Collins, SSJ - SAVANNAH - Sister Rose Mary Collins, a Sister of St. Joseph of Chestnut Hill, Pennsylvania and Secretary for Education for the Catholic Diocese of Savannah died Sunday, May 25, 2014 at Mercy Convent in Savannah where she was receiving Hospice care. She was born in Philadelphia on October 12, 1947 to Edward and Mary Collins. She graduated from Chestnut Hill College in 1976 with a BS degree and from Villanova University in 1981 with an MA degree. Prior to her arrival in Savannah she served as teacher, principal and in administrative positions in various dioceses, serving in the Archdiocese of Washington, DC prior to coming to Savannah. She arrived in Savannah in 1997 following a national search for an Assistant Superintendent for the Catholic Schools of the Diocese of Savannah. She was Assistant Superintendent from 1997 until 2000 when again after a national search she was appointed as Superintendent of Catholic Schools, a position she held until this past year when Bishop Gregory J. Hartmayer, OFM Conv. appointed her to the newly created position of Secretary for Education for the Catholic Diocese of Savannah. During her first year in Savannah, as well as being Assistant Superintendent she was also the Principal of Notre Dame Academy which was then located in the old Cathedral Day School. She was a very talented, organized and committed woman. There is no measuring how much good she did in her life. She was also a Lector and Communion Minister at the Cathedral of St. John the Baptist where she was a very active parishioner. For several years she supervised the domestic staff at the Cathedral Rectory. She was predeceased by her parents, Edward and Mary Collins, and by her sister Catherine Marie Foley, and by her brothers Edward, Donald, John and Edward Joseph, and by her niece, Tracey Anne Collins. Surviving are her sister, Regina Deininger, brothers, Tom Collins and Joe Collins, her nieces, Lisa Bedy, Dianna Collins, Michele Deininger, and Dawn Curtis, and by her nephews, David Collins, Michael Collins, Tommy Collins, Christopher Collins, Joe Collins, Jr., Thomas Collins, John Collins, Jr., Martin Foley and John Foley, Jr. Sister Collins will be taken to the Cathedral of St. John the Baptist to lie in state on Thursday, May 29, 2014 from 5 p.m. - 7 p.m. A Vigil Service with Rosary will be held at the Cathedral of St. John the Baptist on Thursday, May 29, at 7:00 p.m. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at the Cathedral on Friday, May 30, at 10:00 a.m. A reception will follow in the Cathedral Parish Center. Burial will take place later at St. Joseph Villa Cemetery in Flourtown, Pennsylvania. Memorials may be made to St. Joseph Villa, 110 Wissahickon Avenue, Flourtown, PA 19031.
