Sanders Smith

Sanders N. Smith, Jr. - SAVANNAH - Sanders N. Smith, Jr. (Sam) of Savannah, GA passed away peacefully on December 8, 2012 at Hospice House of Savannah after a short and brave battle with cancer. Born in Atlanta, GA on March 30, 1933 to the late Sanders N., Sr. and Lillian Smith, Sam lived most of his youth and young adulthood in Miami, Florida till moving to Savannah in 1963. Beloved husband, father and Papa, Sam will be deeply missed by his wife of 60 years, Shirley Manrose Smith, their son, Darryl (Nancy) Smith of Richmond Hill, GA., and his daughter, Cheryl (Bill) Gearhart of Wadsworth Oh. A man of strong values, he was loved by his family and was extremely proud of his children and grandchildren, Amanda Smith and Sammy, Jessie, Billy and Jimmy Gearhart. He will also be missed by many close family friends. Sam began his career in Miami at Hewes Boatworks, eventually rising to the position of General Manager. He moved his family to Savannah in 1963 to manage Brady Boatworks, a position he occupied for 10 years before he and his wife opened the Boat Center in 1973. They, along with their son, Darryl operated the Boat Center for 40 years, only closing the doors in March of this year. It was his goal for his business to be a warm and inviting environment where families would feel comfortable shopping, and to offer those families the opportunity to enjoy quality, recreational time together through boating. Sam served his country during the Korean War in the US Army, during which time he was stationed at Ft. Bliss, Texas. He also offered of his time and abilities while in the Exchange Club, where he served on several committees during his years of active membership. He was a member of Skidaway Island Baptist Church and was an ordained deacon who loved being of service to God in a number of meaningful ways. Sam's spirit of kindness was evident every day of his life in both his personal and business life. He was admired and respected by all who knew him. Visitation will be at Fox and Weeks, Hodgson Chapel on Wednesday, 12/12/12 from 5:00 - 7:00, pm. The funeral will take place at Skidaway Island Baptist Church on Thursday, 12/13/12 at 11:00 AM. The family has requested that remembrances be made to the Humane Society for Greater Savannah, 7215 Sallie Mood Dr., Savannah, GA 31406.
