Thomas Waldrop

Thomas Jesse Waldrop - ATLANTA - Jake Waldrop, 57, beloved son of Charlie and Betty Waldrop of Savannah, died February 12, 2013. Jake was a native son of Savannah and attended college at Armstrong Atlantic State University. He moved to Atlanta to enroll in Georgia State's first law school class, from which he was a proud alumnus. Jake's entire professional career was spent as an attorney for the Federal Defender Program in Atlanta, where he defended those who could not defend themselves. It was here that his love of all humanity shone brightest. He reveled in the throes of the battle and was a tireless champion for his clients. He was a warrior for justice. Jake was also a big ball of fun. He was a talker and engaged in conversation with each and every one, for he never met a stranger. Jake was unforgettable- a lover of life and laughter, music, and lightheartedness. He practiced the Golden Rule and had legions of wonderful friends. To know him was to love him. Growing up, Jake loved being a Boy Scout and learned the value of hard work from his industrious family. He was active in the church from birth, taught children's Sunday School at St. Luke's Episcopal Church for over 10 years, and most recently at Oak Grove United Methodist. He volunteered as a baseball coach at DHYS, and made life-long friends there. He served on the boards at DHYS and the Sagamore Hills Community Association where he took up their causes as valiantly as those of his clients. Jake's tender, bright spirit lit up many lives. He will be terribly missed by those who basked in his attention and affection. He is survived by his parents; his wife, Vivian; and his cherished son, Graham, to whom he was completely devoted; his twin brother, Jim (Cynthia) of Covington; his sisters Lynn Smithberg (Roy) and Beth Harris (Peter) of Savannah; his niece and nephew, Jessica Stepaniak ( Alan) and Jess Waldrop; and many cousins. He was predeceased by his nephew, Daniel Harris. Jake's life will be celebrated TODAY, February 15, 2013, at 3:00 at Oak Grove United Methodist Church in Decatur. Visitation will be at 1:30 in the church parlor. Glenn Ethridge will officiate.
