Edna DePue Obituary

Edna Elizabeth King DePue - SAVANNAH - Edna K. DePue was born on August 17, 1914 in Hillsboro, Georgia to William Edward and Pearl Middlebrooks King. She graduated from the Georgia Baptist School of Nursing as a Registered Nurse and worked in the Atlanta area for a number of years. In 2005, the Georgia Baptist Nurses Association, now a part of Mercer University, recognized Edna for over sixty years of service to her community and the nursing profession. While working in Atlanta, Edna met her future husband Charlie and they were married in 1938. The couple moved to Savannah in 1942 where Charlie worked as a Funeral Director with Sipples Mortuary. He later was employed by Savannah Machine and Foundry as an electrician and helped build minesweepers for the U. S. Navy during World War II. Edna stayed home to care for a baby and two invalid mothers who lived in her home for over 14 years. Edna and Charlie stepped out in faith together when they founded the DePue Wilbert Vault Co. in 1948. Edna often remarked that the only way she made it through those difficult years was her faith in God and the friends she made at the First Presbyterian Church, where she remained a faithful member for the rest of her life. She served in many roles at First Presbyterian during those years. She was honored by being named Elder Emerita of the Church in 2002. Edna was very active in the community serving with the Charles Ellis P.T.A., The American Red Cross, Wymberley Garden Club and many other organizations. She was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother and friend. Her positive attitude and bright smile lit up the lives of her family and her many friends. She will be greatly missed. She was preceded in death by her husband Charles DePue and her son Robert Edward DePue. Survivors include Charles B. DePue, Jr. and Linda R. DePue, Charles B. DePue, III (Chad), Lauren E. DePue and Dean R. DePue, Deborah G. DePue, widow of Robert, Lydia C. DePue and Emily K. DePue, and five great-grandchildren. Visitation: 4:00 - 6:00 p.m. Saturday at Fox & Weeks Funeral Directors, Hodgson Chapel. Funeral Service: 2:30 p.m. Sunday at First Presbyterian Church with burial following at Bonaventure Cemetery. Remembrances: First Presbyterian Church, 520 Washington Ave., Savannah, Georgia 31405. Charles. I was so saddened to hear about Edna's passing. Our family always felt like she and your dad were relatives when I was growing up. I remember how she took care of your grandmothers. She was the closest thing to a saint I will even know in my lifetime. She was a true lady, and a truly modern woman at the same time. I adored her from the time I was a child, and have so many sweet memories of her. The last time we saw one another was when I was visiting Savannah, & attended church with my niece Robin. Happily, there was Edna with her wonderful smile & eternal cheerfulness. Like so many I am sure, I adored Edna Depue, and will miss her so much. My deepest sympathy goes out to you Charles, in the passing of your dear mother. With affection to you and your family,

We are so very thankful for the life and times of Mrs. Edna Depue. My mother Pearl Hodge and Edna were the best of friends. Edna always greeted everyone with a warm and loving smile, passing on her strength “her force” giving you a new outlook to carry on the day. In good times and bad she would keep the faith and offer hope to everyone around her. She personified a Christian woman who lived a life of faith, hope, charity and love. It has been our honor and privilege to have known her and had our lives blessed by this devoted nurse, wife, mother, grandmother and friend. God blessed our lives with Mrs. Edna Elizabeth King DePue.

Charlie and Linda,
Learning that your mom has gone to be with the Lord was such a shock. My prayers are with you and your family. Edna was such an amazing person. Meeting the needs of so many people, for so many years will cause her to be remembered fondly. Her passing will create a void that only time will heal.
Knowing that you and Edna are saved and will be reunited with her in heaven is such a comforting reassurnace.

Charlie,

Few families experience the endearing love you and your family have enjoyed with Edna. May you find solace in the memories of the model she was for so many.

Charlie and family,
Please accept our deepest condolences. Your mother was so gracious and one of my mother's best friends.
Mother often told tales of the Marine Hospital, and the last picture I have of her was during one of the nurses' reunions at the Beach.
