Emory L. Stone - POOLER - Emory L. Stone, 85 of Pooler, GA passed away peacefully on February 12, 2013, surrounded by family under the care of Spanish Oaks Hospice. Emory was born September 15, 1927, and was a native of Jeff Davis County, GA, the son of the late Charlie Stone and Annie Turner Stone. He attended Rothwell Street Baptist Church and was a member of The Men's Togetherness Sunday School Class. He was a World War II Veteran, volunteering for the U.S. Army just upon turning 18, before graduating from high school. He served in the South Pacific and received a purple heart. He married Betty Jean Persons on June 5, 1954, and they moved to Savannah in 1956. Emory joined the Ironworkers Local Union 709 in 1952, and was an Ironworker on Savannah's original Talmadge Memorial Bridge. He formed an industrial construction firm in 1970 and retired in 1998. Throughout his career, Emory had a strong work ethic and exhibited a keen mechanical mind for troubleshooting. Always an early riser, Emory was known for providing quality work. Emory never asked anyone to perform a job that he would not do himself. Emory loved to watch his children and grandchildren play sports. Emory was an avid hunter and fisherman. He also had a passion for the sport of stock car racing that lead to his involvement and eventual ownership of Oglethorpe Speedway Park which he operated many years with the assistance of his family. He had a great singing voice and was a member of a gospel quartet in his early years. He loved all types of music and enjoyed listening to gospel, classical, bluegrass, and all of the classic big bands of his younger years. He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Betty Persons Stone, son Andy L. Stone and his wife Shay Strickland Stone, son Michael E. Stone and his wife Lisa Hurt Stone, and daughter Pamela Stone Crawford. He is also survived by six grandsons Thomas, Cole, Austin, Brandon, Marshall, and Andrew, two granddaughters Carsyn and Abbigail, one brother Otis Stone of Jacksonville, FL, one sister Mary Edna Knight (James) of Brunswick, GA, two sisters in law Jo Ann Crawford (Bob) of Panama City Beach, FL and Mary Hale (Bob) of Marietta, GA, and several nieces and nephews. He is predeceased by two brothers Woodrow Stone and Elbert Stone and three sisters Myrtle Lee Stone Gay, Sarepta Annie Stone Lewis, Martha Stone Williams, and son in law Joseph P. Crawford. The visitation will be from 6-8 p.m. on Thursday, February 14, 2013, in the chapel of the Thomas C. Strickland & Sons Funeral Home, located at 901 W. Hwy. 80 in Pooler, GA. The funeral will be at 11 a.m. on Friday, February 15, 2013, at Rothwell Street Baptist Church, located at 216 Rothwell Street in Pooler, GA. Active Pallbearers will be: Jeffery C. Fletcher, Robert E. Hendrick, Jr., David B. Pritchard Sr., John G. Tyson, Sr., William C. Tyson, and Harry L. Williams. The family wishes to extend our sincere heartfelt gratitude to his caregivers, especially his longtime caregivers, Delores King, Suzy Roberts, Betty Seay and Melissa McGinn.
