Mrs. Esther Raines Mallard - STATESBORO - Mrs. Esther Raines Mallard, age 85, died peacefully at her residence on Sunday. The Columbia, South Carolina native had lived in Statesboro for the past 46 years. Mrs. Mallard was a history teacher at a number of public school systems throughout her career, and retired from Statesboro High School. After retiring from Statesboro High School she worked with Special Collections with the Georgia Southern Library. She earned a Bachelor of Science from the University of Houston (Texas), a Masters of Arts in History, and Education Specialist degrees from Georgia Southern University, and did other graduate work at various institutions. She was a member of Alumni Associations at Columbia College and the University of South Carolina. She was formerly a member of the Auxiliary at East Georgia Regional Medical Center, was a member of the Bulloch County Historical Society, and was a member of First United Methodist Church of Statesboro, where she was in the Dan Williams Sunday School Class. She loved to travel with her husband, especially to Europe. She was a proud and devoted grandmother, and regularly addressed family and friends as Sugar. She also loved exposing her grandchildren to the Arts. Surviving are her husband of 63 years, Jack Mallard of Statesboro; four sons, John Mallard (Kaye) and Michael Mallard, both of West Columbia, S.C., Richard Mallard (Janet) of Statesboro, and Bobby Mallard (Melissa) of Savannah; four grandchildren, Christie Mallard of Litchfield Beach, S.C., Rob Mallard of Charlotte, N.C., Anna Mallard of Statesboro, and Preston Mallard (Alyssa) of Honolulu, Hawaii; and a devoted friend and companion, Susan Boerner of Statesboro. A memorial service for Mrs. Mallard will be held Thursday at 11:00 a.m. in the chapel of Joiner-Anderson Funeral Home with Rev. Jimmy Cason officiating. Burial will be private. Visitation will be Wednesday from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. at Joiner-Anderson. Remembrances may be made to the , Coastal Georgia Regional Office, 201 Television Circle, Savannah, GA 31406, or to a .
