Henry Grady Deal, Jr. aka "Coach Harry Deal" - SAVANNAH - Henry Grady Deal, Jr., aka "Coach Harry Deal", 84 of Savannah, died Wednesday, June 3, 2009 at Hospice Savannah. He was born in Savannah, Ga., and was preceded in death by his wife, Ann Bergman Deal, his son, Stephen Harry Deal, and his sister, Elizabeth Deal Stafford. He was a Graduate of Benedictine Military School, and he had been a loved and respected volunteer at Benedictine since 1951. He was a veteran of WW II, having served in the US Army. He was also elected as "Veteran of the Year" in 1991, and was chairman of the Veterans Council for two years. Coach Harry Deal was relentless when it came to getting the WW II Monument. He was retired from the Savannah Fire Department. He was a Communicant of St. James Catholic Church, and was Parade Grand Marshall in 1999 for the St. Patrick's Day Parade. He served as an Adjutant for the St. Patrick's Day Parade Committee for more than six decades. He founded the Shenanigans Society and was a founding member of the Irish Heritage Society. Founding member of the Fenian Society, member of American Legion Post # 184, Veterans of Foreign Wars Post # 4392, River Street Christmas Parade Organizer, Founder of the Drum and Bugle Corps of St. James School, He received the Service Award in 1966 from the Veterans Council of Chatham County. He received the Colonel Stephen S. Koszewski Award for Loyalty, Service and Devotion to BC. In 1967 he served as Semi Pro Coach of the Year for the Savannah Indians, and was inducted into the Greater Savannah Athletic Hall of Fame in May 1987, for appreciation for outstanding service rendered to the advancement of sports in the Savannah Area. In 2000, he was nominated WTOC Hometown Hero. Those closest to Coach Harry Deal say on the surface he seemed to be an old tough guy and at times he was, but deep down he just loved everybody and that he'll be greatly missed. He is survived by a daughter, Gloria Deal Strickland, Savannah, Ga; a son, James Robert Deal, Sr., (Connie), of Savannah, Ga; sister, Norma Deal Downing of Savannah, Ga; 3 grandchildren, Therese Leibold (Joe), Katie Deal and James Robert Deal, Jr., and 5 great grandchildren. Visitation: 4-6 p.m. Sunday at St. James Catholic Church. Rosary Service: 6 p.m. Sunday at St. James Catholic Church. Mass of Christian Burial: 11 a.m. Monday at St. James Catholic Church with Father Mark Ross and Father Frank Ziemkiewicz, officiating. Interment will follow in the Holy Cross Section of the Catholic Cemetery, with Military Honors.
