John Huber

John Y. Jack Huber, 3rd - SAVANNAH - John Yateman Huber, 3rd, died September 15, 2013. Jack was born July 3, 1919 in Wynnewood, Pennsylvania to John Y. Huber, Jr. and Caroline Miller Huber. After graduating from St. George's School in 1938, he attended Yale University and graduated in June 1942 with a Bachelor of Science degree. While at Yale he joined the St. Elmo Fraternity, residing there during his junior and senior years. During the summer of 1941, he served in the Navy as a probationary Ensign, and upon graduation was fully commissioned. After two years of shore duty, he served in the Pacific Theater on escort carriers as an engineering officer, ending his service in 1946 as Chief Engineer of a newly commissioned escort carrier. Upon leaving the Navy, John started his business career at the Keebler-Weyl Baking Company in Philadelphia. In 1962, he left that company to go into the silk screen printing business, in which he worked until his retirement in 1989. In 1948, John married Margaretta B. Black of Atlanta, Georgia. They moved to Gladwyne, Pennsylvania where they lived until 1992, before moving to The Landings on Skidaway Island in Savannah, Georgia. They had two children. Daughter, Caroline Browne Huber, widow of Walter W. Hopps who died in 2005, is now living in Pasadena, California. Their son, John Y. Huber, 4th, resides in Scottsdale, Arizona and is married to Mary Jo Helmer. They have two children, John Mark Huber and Allison Rose Huber. Margaretta, better known to friends as Chick, died in December, 1998. While in the Philadelphia area after the war and until his moving to Savannah, John was involved with several civic groups. He helped to found St. Christopher's Episcopal Church in Gladwyne and served on its vestry, was a board member of the YMCA of Philadelphia and a branch manager of two branches. He chaired the Food Industry Committee of the United Fund, and joined the Delaware River Power Squadron in 1958, later becoming a Life Member. He founded the DRPS Outboard Club to provide activities for small boaters, and enjoyed many years of pleasure boating in the Chesapeake Bay, New Jersey, and wherever he could trailer his boat. He also was a member of The Philadelphia Country Club where he played golf. Upon moving to The Landings, John played golf among other activities, and continued his boating activities, working with the Tybee Light Power Squadron, serving with The Dolphin Project and also The Caretta Project. Jack also served as a volunteer with the Coastal Jail Ministries in Chatham County and was a member of its board. He was also a member of the Skidaway Island Kiwanis Club and the Skidaway Island United Methodist Church. He is also survived by George Willing Scudder, son of his late sister, Anne Willing Huber; the three children of his brother, Richard Miller Huber, who lives in Washington, DC; Cintra McGauley, Richard M. Huber, Jr., and Casilda Huber. From his marriage to Margaretta, he is also survived by the six children of her late brother, George Browne Black: Jeanette Kroenke, Elizabeth Black, George B. Black, Jr., Helen Black, J. Howard P. Black and Louise Yarnall; and five children of her other brother, the late Ralph Peters Black,Jr.: Ralph P. Black, 3rd, Carolyn Volk, Susan Miller, Janette Gilbert and Julie Boggs. In October 2000, Jack married Mary Laura Lee Peebles, of Savannah. Peebles was the widow of George E. Peebles, and mother of four boys, Gary, Michael, twin boys, Larry and Jerry, plus twin girls Carol Harris and Meryl McGinley. Mary has 11 grandchildren and 2 great-grandchildren. A funeral service will be held September 28, 2013 at 10:00 a.m. at Skidaway Island United Methodist Church. Interment will be next to Margaretta in the cemetery at St. Christopher's Church.
