Mark Finlay Obituary

Dr. Mark Russell Finlay - SAVANNAH - Dr. Mark Russell Finlay was born on September 15, 1960 in Baltimore, Maryland. He was the son of the late Dr. Roger W. Finlay and Dee Ann Finlay. He received his B.A. in 1982 from Grinnell College, and his M.A. in 1988 and Ph.D. in 1992, both from Iowa State University. Mark joined the faculty at Armstrong Atlantic State University in 1992 as Assistant Professor of History. He founded the University's Honors Program in 1996 and served as its director until 2004. He was promoted to Associate Professor in 1998, to Professor in 2005, and has served as Assistant Dean of the College since 2002. Hundreds of publications, grants and awards provide ample evidence of Mark's extraordinary scholarship. His book, Growing American Rubber: Strategic Plants and the Politics of National Security, published by Rutgers University Press in 2009, was awarded the Theodore Saloutos Memorial Prize for best book published in the field of agricultural history and was reprinted in paperback. Book review editor of Agricultural History since 2009, Mark also served on many international, national, and local boards. A current project, a history of Ossabaw Island, recently provided him the opportunity to interview President Jimmy Carter. But the most outstanding achievement of Mark's life isn't listed on his vita; his greatest legacy will be his exceptional devotion as a husband and father who loved his family beyond all else. Mark's interests were as wide as the world. He loved music, from blues to indie rock to Gregorian chants. He collected political buttons and bizarre liquors from around the world, and was photographed picking local produce in more than 30 countries to which he and his wife traveled. Mark could be seen in downtown music clubs, courtside at tennis courts throughout the southeast watching his sons compete, and at most any lecture around town. He was also a member of his college golf team and held the course record at the Grinnell Country Club. Mark's goal in life was simply to learn everything, and he was well on his way, as evinced by his undefeated status in Trivial Pursuit. Mark is survived by his loving wife of 26 years, Kelly Applegate; two sons, Greyson and Ellis; his mother, Dee Ann Finlay; and his sister, Sharyn Finlay-Bitzer. A memorial service will be held in the Fine Arts Auditorium at Armstrong Atlantic State University on Friday, October 11, 2013, at 1:00pm. In lieu of flowers, contributions to the Mark R. Finlay Visiting Lecture Series at Armstrong Atlantic State University are appreciated. Savannah Morning News October 10, 2013 Please sign our Obituary Guest Book at savannahnow.com/obituaries.

I like so many others are deeply sadden by the sudden loss of Mark Finlay. I met Dr. Finaly in 1993 when I first arrived at Armstrong. I was a Science Major (Chemistry) and didn't think much of History. My thoughts soon changed as Mark explained all there was to know about a German Chemist named Justus Liebig. After that I was hooked and got my own minor in History.
Thank you Dr. Finlay for having the passion you had for the History of Science and for Inspiring So Many More along the way.
My thoughts are with your family and know that he will be truly missed.

Professor Finlay created a unique environment for his Honors kids, full of humor, curiosity, and respect. As nurturing a spirit he had for his uni family, he had even more for his real family, so it is to his beautiful wife and sons that my heart goes out to.
I thoroughly enjoyed the chats about books and music I had with Dr. Finlay throughout my years at AASU, it's a huge loss for present and future students that they won't get to experience his bolstering enthusiasm and proudly geeky humor. He was simply a deeply good, deeply intelligent, guy.

Took European history from Professor Finlay in 1993 when he first began at Armstrong. Our paths randomly crossed at intermittent intervals for years afterwards. His death is a real shock. What I remember most about him was a wry smile and his friendliness. He was a very good teacher and always encouraged his students to think. I said a rosary for his soul when I heard he passed. God bless his family.

Dr. Finlay was a mentor and a friend. I was a little lost when I started school at AASU, but he not only gave me a home in the Honors Program, but as I was an older student, he also gave me a mission to lead and serve. His guidance and wisdom then helped inform my later choices, so he has had a huge impact on my life. My husband liked to call him 'The Codfather', because of a book we used in one of his classes, and because his opinion was so very important to me. There is a hole in this world that cannot be filled by anyone else. My condolences to his family and to all the students and scholars who will never have the privilege of knowing him.

I was shocked and saddened to hear of Dr. Finaly's passing. I was visiting my mom in Savannah and saw his obituary in the paper. I graduated from AASU in 1997. He was an excellent teacher and was passionate about the subject matter that he taught. He was a tough but fair teacher. His set high expectations for his students. My thoughts and prayers are with his family.

I was flattened at hearing the news of Mark's death. Mark was a wonderful colleague and scholar, and my heart goes out to his family. We became acquainted in the late 1980s as I was finishing up doctoral work on Liebig and Mark was beginning his. Through conversations about agricultural history, academia, and — yes — music, I got to know Mark as a friend and looked forward to seeing him at professional meetings. Though Mark is gone, may his legacy live on with his family, Armstrong State, and the profession.

In our years in Savannah and at Armstrong we have so many fond memories of so many events with Mark and Kelly. Mark was always so kind in sharing his knowledge and insight and was a friend in so many ways. From workouts together with Armstrong faculty, to watching Armstrong sporting teams, to conversations about our kids activities and discussions about our work as Assistant Dean's he will be greatly missed and remembered often. Our thoughts and prayers are with Mark, Kelly, and the boys.

I am stricken by the news of our loss of Mark Finlay. I had emailed him today and received word back by phone call from the college. We met on Ossabaw Island in 2010 and shared a love for the island, and history of coastal Georgia and many individuals who worked to preserve it. Last spring I met his Honors students at the regional conference, here in Kentucky, and it is clear his legacy is beyond our knowing, the individuals his life has touched. I give thanks for his life and I send my deepest sympathy and care to his wife, children, mother and sister, and of course to all of his colleagues and students.

Mark was a great friend and scholar. He will be missed.

Whenever I crossed paths with him at ASEH or Ag History meetings, I was impressed by his dedication to the practice of history, his curiosity, and his kindness. October 14, 2013

I followed after Mark in the History of Technology & Science program at Iowa State University. He left some awfully big shoes to fill.

I'll never forget the our summer NEH Institute field trip to the corn genomics lab. Mark was conspicuously absent, up until the last minute, when he proudly rode up and joined us. Just another excuse to put 30 miles on his bicycle. This man was as alive as they get.

October 14, 2013

Our sympathies to the wife and family of Dr. Mark Finlay - a scholar, a mastet teacher and splendid human being. Mark interviewed me here at Marshwrack about a book he was doing on the Georgia Coast. I have rarely met a researcher who was as through and ask all the hard questions about his subject. Amstrong University, Georgia and the nation have suffered a grevious loss. I hope his family will be able in some way to recover from their loss.

Mark was the epitome of a mentor, be they a student, a colleague or a freshly-minted Ph.D. I will be ever grateful for his kindness to me as I learned the ropes of the academy, and his enthusiasm for the work of others. We have all lost so much in Mark's sudden passing.

Dr. Finlay helped me see my potential and didn't ever let me take the easy way out. I am grateful for his advice, his instruction, and his friendship through my years at Armstrong. I appreciated that were were able to stay in touch over the last 6 years as well. As I teach my own students, I hope that I can share with them the passion and excitement for learning new things and challenging that Dr. Finlay shared with me.

Sending love to you and the boys...

Mark was a fantastic person and I greatly enjoyed working with him during my years at Armstrong. He was a great academic, and a kind and gentle soul. I will never forget how kind he and Kelly were to me during this time. The world is a better place because Mark was in it, but it is sadder today because he left us too soon.

October 12, 2013

Dear Kelly, Please accept our deepest sympathy for your family's loss. We
were not able to spend any measurable time with him, but he was always with us through you and the boys. I can still remember meeting him for the first time when you were married in Ames Iowa. October 11, 2013

I can trace a lot of what I've built in the last five years to a crucial moment when Dr. Finlay knew to shove me—hard—in the right direction. I was dithering over options and considering staying longer at Armstrong, when Dr. Finlay told me, in no uncertain terms, that this would be last semester and it was time to move on to grad school. I'd met him within the first twenty minutes of arriving on campus, and he knew, after a lifetime of academic advising and mentoring, how and when to push a stubborn student. Although angry at the time, it turned out to be the best advice I've ever received. Eight months after this conversation, I took an internship that led to my dream job. Without that tough love, I don't know where I'd be. I'm sad to see him taken so soon and broken-hearted to know he won't be able to push others in the right direction—even if they didn't know it for years.

October 11, 2013

I am so incredibly shocked and saddened by this news. Dr. Finlay encouraged me to take a fantastic Masters course at Armstrong. He also saw most of my performances with The Collective Face Theatre Ensemble, and always asked "when is the next show, Alexis?" I will absolutely miss receiving his encouraging e-mails asking when I'll take another course. He will be greatly missed by all who knew him. My heart goes out to his wife and children and the rest of his family. You are all in my thoughts during this time of deep sorrow.

Michelle Hopkins

October 11, 2013

He was my academic advisor for the PCL program and he was so diligent and so proud of the success of program. My last image of him was when I caught him in the hallway after leaving his office. I pointed and said Dr . Finlay and he responded with a smile on his face. I lost my brother this year and I want to say that I understand what it is like to lose a loved one. May Jehovah God be with him and his family. Death is not forever. My deepest condolences.

October 11, 2013

Dr. Finlay became my adviser when I entered into the Honors Program in 2001. I was a health science major and recently married. We didn't have much in common at the time, as I have never been much of a history buff. He won me over during a history course lecture on how cod led to the discovery of America. The lecture ended with him passing around cod for everyone to taste. He had a unique sense of humor that made a subject that I wasn't fond of extremely interesting. He became a great influence in my life. I already had a job in my field through my in-laws company when I presented my practicum, yet he continued to take the time to encourage me and praise me for my successes. He will be dearly missed, but never forgotten.

I was privelged to have Dr. Finlay as a teacher during my years at Armstrong. I met Dr. Finlay in 1992 when I entered Armstrong State College. He showed me the importance of a degree in History. He led by example and displayed the highest professionalism. In 2001, I served as a research assistant and witnessed first-hand the rigors of publishing he endured in the completion of his book. Growing American Rubber is a great legacy of his intellect, understanding, and message. He recommended that I attend graduate school. I complete that program in December and dedicate my successes to the academic seeds of courage he planted in me. I will miss you very much, Dr. Finlay. Rest in peace knowing you were indeed, loved dearly.

Dr. Finlay was an exceptional and challenging professor. At the time it always seemed much more difficult than we would have liked, but he taught me to keep fighting and for that I will always be appreciative.
