Martha Cornish - ATLANTA - Martha Sue Cornish, most recently of Atlanta, Georgia, died peacefully on June 22, 2013. She was born on September 11, 1942 and grew up in Little Rock, Arkansas. Martha was an active member of the Savannah community from 1980 to 1996. She attended Christ Church Episcopal where she regularly worshipped and served as president of the Episcopal Church Women and a volunteer at Emmaus House. She later served on the Vestry of St. Paul's Episcopal Church. After her daughters graduated from Savannah Country Day School, she taught English at Beach High School. Martha received a B.A. in English from the University of Texas at Austin and earned a master's degree in French from the Paris-Sorbonne University. She taught English, French and became a certified Montessori pre-school teacher before moving to Savannah. Martha was a very thoughtful, loving and observant woman, who enjoyed all parts of life and the physical beauty of the world around her. Beyond anything else, though, she took enormous pleasure in spending time with her grandchildren, who affectionately referred to her as Bammy. Her parents, Wana Wood Brown and Fred Edgar Brown predeceased her. Survivors include: her husband, H. L. Pete Cornish, Jr.; two daughters, Virginia Wood Cornish of New York City and Eleanor Cornish Chu of Boston, Massachusetts; Virginia's husband, Don Rollock, and their children, Chloe Wood, Griffin Lyndon and Isaura Wood; Ellie's husband, Brian Chu, and their sons, Dylan Kirkpatrick Jiaqi and Lyndon Harrison Jiawei; and many loved cousins and their children. The graveside service and burial will be at 1 pm on Saturday, June 29, 2013 at the Ramsey Creek Preserve outside Westminster, South Carolina. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be sent to the Nature Conservancy, the Sierra Club or the AACR Foundation for the Prevention and Cure of Cancer.
