Dearest Sam,

16 years since we lost your beautiful soul. You are so sorely missed. I was told
tonight that you continue to watch over me and your godson. Oh how I wish you were here. You just always knew. You´d be proud of Ronins strength and resilience even if he´s rebellious but he sure could have used your influence growing up. But your spirit lives on in our hearts. I´m tired my dear. This life hasn´t been easy and I know you want me to keep going because I feel your presence. But some days are harder and I just want to give in. Then I remember your words. How you told me that I was strong, beautiful and worth more. Your tattoo is still as bright as the day I got it. Isn´t that something? I miss you more than you could know. I don´t know how long until I´ll sit next to you in heaven but I know because I will see you again I don´t fear anything. I love you my friend. Til Valhalla.

Mom, Sam, and me.

As siblings get older they tend to start living their own lives and not staying in contact unless a holiday arises or a funeral comes about.

I encourage you to call your mom and dad, go see your sister or brother, send your neice or nephew a card or just call them. I wish I could rewind time to tell my brother how much I love him before he passed. His bright smile, corny jokes and voice rings in my head constantly. I miss him everyday but I will never forget the good times we shared.
Love you, Sam Bam.....

your sis,
Damitta

It has been a long time since we saw each other but I remember your infectious personality. You could always make me laugh. The one memory that sticks out in my mind is one night ot the radio station. Everything was going wrong. The tape for recording phone calls broke. You looked out the window and said "I love my job"

I miss you. I miss the way you always made us laugh. I miss the silly voices you put on. You are and always will be the diamond in the rough. Your personality was infectious and everyone you came in contact with caught "The Sam Fever".

Where do I even begin...you've been part of my life for many, many moons. Uncle Sam, to Krissy and a dear, sweet WONDERFUL friend to me! I love ya and miss ya, but I certainly "feel" ya. Thinking of you always brings a smile to my face and joy to my heart! A favorite memory, hmmmmmm...two words: AUNT BUNNY

Sam, I really wish I had been able to have spent more time with you. You were always joking with me and making me laugh even when I didn't want to. I try to tell my friends different stories about the stuff we did and even have a video of the show "Undergound Savannah" with everyone cutting up. It is a little hard to watch sometimes but worth a good cry once in a while.

Well, dear brother, it's been a year since I last saw you and there is rarely a day that goes by that you don't cross my mind. When I think of you though, it's with a smile on my face, remembering all the great times we had and the silly crap that we did together.
I know that you are still around me and finally getting back at me for all the practical jokes that I played on you. Even now, there is something happening to tell me that you are near. One day I will post a story on facebook that will show your friends that you are near and having the best time.
I love you bro and miss you

Well Sam.....you will be missed more that you will ever know. You have been a great friend to many. You have set examples for others to follow, and given some of the best advice. Too bad some of us did not take that advice. I can remember so many wonderful times with you. Although we have not seen each other in so many years, you have always had, and will continue to have a great big spot in my heart. All i can say is that we are all better folks because of you. i love you and will forever miss you.

Samuel Marqueith Johnson,

I hardly got to know you, and that was at a Quarterman family reunion in 1979, but I enjoyed tha fact that I did get to meet you. May you rest in eternal peace.

Over the past week, I have read the signatures left here for Sam and have come to one inescapable conclusion. Sam Johnson touched more lives than even he ever knew. Most of us can only aspire to have that many people so close to us. Sam is truly the richest man I ever knew.
And though I will miss him deeply and have wept many tears at his passing, I also know that he gave me a joy that few can ever attain. Sam was, is and always will be my true brother and I hope that when we meet again we can finally get those waffles he promised me.
But to those of us that have to face the rest of our days without the smile of Sam to brighten our day, I say to you, do not weep for Sam. He will make fun of you and call you names. Though he is missed, his memory will live for all eternity as long as there is someone talking about him and there is an internet. Besides, he's still at Steeds messing with the karaoke equipment.
I love you Sam and will indeed miss you, but I know that when my time comes, there will be no greater reception than when you, my father and I meet at the gates of heaven.

When God takes something away from your grasp, He's not punishing you, but merely opening your hands to receive something better. The will of God will never take you where the grace of God will not protect you.
Sorry my nephew, I could not be there at your celebration of life;but I do know that God has taken you to a better place.
May you have a safe trip home. There you will see your Grandmother 'Annie B'and others that will hold your hand. So my beloved nephew life is not about to survive the storm , but how to dance in the rain.So dance my boy!!!!!!!!!!!!!

There are no words that can express how sad I was when I heard the news. Instead of dwelling on it, I remember the fun times. I remember all those midnight to 6am shift at Z-102. What a crazy cast of charaters came through those doors on Johnson Square. The friendship led us to Savannah Underground. Thank you for letting me be your Ed McMahon! I also cannot forget driving to FOX TV in Hardeeville, all the while jamming to the Beetles. What a great time we had! More recently, it was great seeing you at Cumulus the short time I was there. Thank you for giving me those memories and letting me share a few fleeting moments in your life! I will see you on the otherside.

Dear Son:

I hope that you knew how honored I was that you would call me Mom, expecially when I know how much you loved and missed your own Mother. Thank you for singing Green Green Grass of Home in honor of Dad and It's a Wonderful World on your last night. I will cherish the memory the rest of my days, until we meet again. You touched so many lives and hearts and made them better. You were truly a SUPER man. I will miss your love, laughter, wonderful voice, and all the good times we spent together. Most of us only aspire to make and impact in this world, but you made yours.

Sleep in Peace beloved Son.

I know it is very cliche so say "he will sorely be missed," "he was such a good guy," "everyone loved him,"" he made everyone laugh and smile," BUT I can not think of another person to whom those words are SO TRUE! As Caveman said (whose last day was my first day @ Cumulus) Sam was also one of the first guys I actually "clicked" with. We shared stories of working "across the river" (during different tenure times at Adventure Radio, which was located over on Hilton Head Island, South Carolina at the time.) Sam and I worked together and covered a few shifts for each other at Cumulus and he even stepped in for me when my dad passed away on Christmas Eve of 2007 to cover my shifts. I was producing the "John Boy and Billy Morning Show" @ WIXV. He was one of the VERY FEW whom actually called me to send his condolences while I was away. I was just reading his blog when he wrote about his public access show..... I remember working with him the day he wrote that. Sam and production director, Jeff McDermott, were telling stories of "the good ol' days" doing the Public Access show. Seeing Sam reminisce and glow in the days-gone-bye, is how I will remember Sam..... Man, the memories!! I remember fighting with him over the cushions to the couch in the "jock lounge" (or lack-there-of) as we were both working WAY LATE with our "other jobs," and working WAY EARLY at the radio station!!! Both of us were looking to catch an hour or two of sleep in the respective studios of the stations, we were working on the next morning. I remember thinking "what in the world are we doing sleeping on the floor in the studio, making very little money, just to do something we loved to do??" I shared the passion of working in radio, with Sam. We endured late nights, early mornings, swing shifts, holidays, covering "full timers" sick days/vacations, last minute remotes, satellite changes..... the list goes on and on.... all the grunt work in radio. Sam is definitely in a better place, and I will always remember him as "ONE OF THE GOOD GUYS." Krystal Burger and vending machine breakfast...... THAT'S HOW WE ROLL!!!!

Sam and I worked together at Adventure Radio and shared many laughs together and I came to know we also faced struggles similarly- laughing to keep from crying. I just learned he was pursuing a higher education late in life, as I am; another something in common I wish I'd known about Sam. We loved laughing with Sam at work and we cry now at his passing, but know his voice rings strong now in Heaven. Many blessings to your loved ones, Sam. You are sorely missed.

We are too far away to get there to say our final farewells in person, but know that Sam is in our hearts and will always be. He was a fantastic person and there is a void in the world without his humor, talent and sheer chutzpah. Danielle and I will miss you so much!

Sam was a fun, LOUD, "Larger than life," friend. I have SO many memories of the time we worked together at Oldies 98.3 and Adventure Radio. Sam TRULY Loved music and his distinct voice WILL be missed on Savannah's airwaves! Sam was always a Gentleman and good friend to me-and he made me laugh!

April 24, 2009

Ah, Hajii Pajii, Master Detective, where have you gone? I first met Sam when I came to Savannah at 21 as editor of Good Times/Creative Loafing magazine. I was immediately impressed that a guy my age not only knew who Jack Benny was, but could name BOTH secret identities of The Shadow! And I'll treasure all those nights throwing around just the wildest ideas for the "Underground Savannah" show in the luxurious setting of Drayton Tower Apartments.

Sam was a solid, solid friend. Even when he had that questionable Kid 'n Play-influenced haircut.

The day before I found out about his passing, I thought of Sam when I was in a record store and saw a poster for one of the "Dolemite" movies, which we really enjoyed watching together and ranking on. A larger-than-life personality is gone, and at a way too young age.

Rest in Peace, Soul Brother Like No Other.

April 24, 2009

It was with a heavy heart that I received news of the passing of my friend of the past 27 years. After reflecting on Sam's victories and challenges in life, it occurs to me that his life was a drama befitting the comic books and sci-fi stories we both enjoyed so much. Like the best characters of those stories, Sam had infectious humor and unrelenting loyalty to his friends. Now that Sam's tale is over, I offer my sympathies and prayers for his family and will cherish his memory in my own remaining days.
