Mary Bevill Helmey - SAVANNAH - Mary B. Helmey, 86, passed away on Sunday, October 6, 2013 at home surrounded by her loving family and under hospice care. Mrs. Helmey was a native of Effingham County and had lived in Savannah since 1944. She was the daughter of the late Emory Hinton Bevill, Sr. and Bertie Connor Bevill. Mrs. Helmey graduated from Newington High School, Screven County, Georgia as Valedictorian. She also graduated from Warren A. Candler School of Nursing and Armstrong College as a registered nurse. She retired as a private duty nurse. Mrs. Helmey was a member of the Wilmington Island Methodist Church, Friendship Sunday School Class, Alee Shrine Auxiliary and Charter president of the Greeterettes Auxiliary of the Alee Shrine. Mrs. Helmey, with her beloved husband, Windy, loved to travel and enjoyed ballroom dancing. She was preceded in death by three brothers, Watson, Jim, and Beymer Bevill, and one sister, Sarah Pryor. Survivors include her devoted husband of 64 years, C. Winfield (Windy) Helmey; her son, Michael Winfield Helmey; granddaughter, Lauren M. Polk; grandson, Philip Michael Helmey; daughter-in-law, Cynthia A. Helmey, all of Savannah. Mrs. Helmey is also survived by her great grandson, Ethan Michael Polk, the joy of her life. She is also survived by her sister, Lytle Bevill; sister-in-law, Shirley S. Bevill, and a number of nieces, nephews, and cousins. The funeral service will be held Tuesday at 11:00 AM at the Wilmington Island Methodist Church with Rev. James Sapp officiating. Visitation will be held at the church one hour prior to the funeral service. Entombment will be in Forest Lawn Memory Gardens Mausoleum. Memorial contributions may be made to Hospice Savannah, P.O.
