Joseph O'Loughlin Obituary
Joseph Francis O'Loughlin, Jr. - SAVANNAH - Joseph Francis O'Loughlin, Jr. 90, passed away peacefully April 22nd at Hospice House in Savannah. He was a native of Savannah and son of Joseph Francis and Pansy Bolton O'Loughlin. He graduated from Benedictine Military School, Class of 1942. He played basketball and a member of the first Benedictine Basketball Team to ever win the Savannah City Championship. He was a member of the original Savannah Basketball Officials Association in the 1940's, serving as President for several years. He was a lifelong communicant of Sacred Heart Catholic Church. He served in the Army Air Force during World War II and flew out of England while assigned to the Eighth Air Force 36th Bomb Squadron. He received the Air Medal and the Distinguished Unit citation. He received credit for action during the Normandy, Germany, Air Europe, The Rhine and Ardennes Campaigns. He was a member of the Savannah Post 36th American Legion, DAV 8, and the National Retired Federal Employees Association. He retired in 1982 from the U.S. Post Office as Branch Manager after 37 years of service. He was a regular playing member of the Bacon Park Golf Course for over 50 years and holds the course record of 63 on the original 18 holes of Bacon Park set in 1974 at the age of fifty years of age. He served over 25 years on the Bacon Park Commission under four different mayors. He supported and worked many years in the improvement of the Bacon Park area and Golf Course. This year, he will be inducted into the 2014 Greater Savannah Athletic Hall of Fame as a Citation Honoree for his vast contributions to Savannah athletics for over 70 years. He is preceded in death by his wife of 62 years, Mary Casey O'Loughlin, by his parents, his sisters, Nell Girardeau and Dorothy Mulling and his son-in-law, Allen R. Myers. He is survived by his three daughters, Beth Myers of Pueblo, CO, Barbara (Michael) Westerfield of Mt. Pleasant, SC and Patricia (Charles) Rann of Roswell, GA; three grandchildren, Katie Rann Reinhard of Roswell, GA; Yancey Joseph Westerfield of London, England and John Charles Rann of Cumming, GA; and four step-grandchildren Brent Myers, Blair Myers, Melissa M. Loftis and Meredeth M. Murr; and 2 great-grandchildren Donald John Reinhard and Madelyn Jane Rann and many nieces and nephews. Visitation: The family will receive friends from 5pm until 7pm on Friday, April 25, 2014 at Fox & Weeks Funeral Directors, Hodgson Chapel. The Rosary will be said at 6:30pm. Mass of Christian Burial: Will be celebrated at 10am on Saturday, April 26, 2014 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church. Burial: Greenwich Section of Bonaventure Cemetery. Pallbearers will be: J. Michael Westerfield, Charles R. Rann, John C. Rann, Robert F. Mulling, Bert Smith and Robert Sumowski.
