Amos Smith, Jr. September 27, 1933 - January 13, 2012 - SAVANNAH - Amos Smith, Jr., age 78, passed away on Friday, January 13, 2012. Born in Savannah, Georgia, he was the son of the late Amos Smith, Sr. and the late Angeline McMillan, Smith. He was preceded in death by his sister Emily Smith and brothers Joseph Smith and Lawrence Smith. Mr. Smith was a graduate of Beach High School. Mr. Smith served in the United States Army from 1953 - 1956. He was a medic and a conscientious objector. Mr. Smith returned to Savannah and worked for Derst Baking Company. Mr. Smith was selected as the first Black Foreman within the cake department. Mr. Smith was married to Rose Marie Overstreet on August 24, 1963. In 1968, Mr. Smith started his own business, Smith Cleaning Service. Mr. Smith was a member of West Broad Street Seventh Day Adventist Church since his childhood. Mr. Smith rose to become First Elder from 1970 -1978. Mr. Smith is survived by his former wife Rose Marie Smith, who maintained a close friendship. Children: Marc Anthony (Atsuko) Smith, Monique Smith, Mertha (Sam) Maddox and Mario (Kenyatta) Smith all of Savannah, Georgia. Three Grandchildren: Mario Smith, Keionte Wade and Mina Smith. Sisters: Lucy (George) Brown and Ann Parker of Savannah, Georgia. Mary Marie Smith of Silver Springs, Maryland. Brothers: Michael George (Lonnie Mae) Smith, Alfred Andrew (Juliette) Smith of Miami, Florida. Cousins: Doris McFall, Mary K. Blackshear, and Charles McMillan all of Savannah, Georgia.
