Sister Mary Brigid Buttimer, RSM - SAVANNAH - Sister Mary Brigid Buttimer, Margaret Elizabeth Buttimer), was born to Elizabeth Deegan (Beth) and Patrick Joseph (Toby) Buttimer March 12, 1929 in Savannah, Georgia . She died peacefully at Mercy Convent in Savannah on December 14, 2012. A graduate of Saint Vincent's Academy, Sister Brigid also held degrees from Mount Saint Agnes College and Loyola University in Baltimore, Maryland. Entering the Sisters of Mercy on September 8, 1947, Sister Brigid served many happy and productive years as a teacher and school administrator in Catholic schools in Baltimore and Potomac, Md., Columbus, Augusta, Atlanta and Savannah, Ga. She was also the pastoral associate at Saint Benedict the Moor parish, Savannah. At Camp Villa Marie, while working with the children of rural and urban Georgia, she also served as a mentor and model for young sisters, seminarians and priests. Sister Brigid earned her CPE certificate and served at Hospice Savannah before taking up the position of Director of Pastoral Care at Saint Joseph's Hospital Atlanta. She returned to Savannah to serve as Chaplain at Saint Joseph's Hospital Savannah. Sister Brigid is predeceased by her parents, Beth and Toby, her brothers Pat, Jack, Jimmy and Tommy as well as her sisters-in-law Jeanne, Emagene and Mary Louise Buttimer. She is survived by the members of her community of the Sisters of Mercy, her brothers Anthony, Richard (Loretto), Eddie (Rochelle), her sister, Sr. Helen Marie, her sisters-in-law Martha and Molly, numerous nephews, nieces grand -nephews and nieces, countless grateful students and many close friends. Known throughout her life for her good humor, quick wit and happy demeanor, Sister Brigid's beautiful Buttimer eyes could spot trouble before it brewed in the classroom, and charm her students into good behavior. She loved her family and community with a rollicking affection and is much beloved by the Buttimers and the Sisters of Mercy. Visitation will be held at St. Francis Cabrini Church from 6:00p.m.on Sunday, December 16, with the vigil service at 5:00p.m. Mass of Christian Burial is scheduled for 11:00a.m., Monday, December 17 also at St. Francis Cabrini.
