As one of the best friends I've ever known, I still miss Gage often and still smile every time I think of him. On the boxes below, of the question : How did you know M. Gage Ochsner, I tried to check Friend AND Work AND School, because they were all true. But only allowed to check one box, Friend was an easy choice. A brilliant and caring physician and surgeon, great father and family man.......As far as this world goes, he was taken far too soon.

I know this is a late message but it needs to be said and I hope his family sees it.
I trained under Dr. Ochsner in Savannah in 2005-2007. He was so encouraging and such a great role model.
I rewatched my graduation video recently and broke down into tears when I saw he was the one who hooded me with my MD degree. We learned so much from him-what it means to be a full scope doc. Caring at home, in the community, serving others before self. I admire him then, and now. I will never forget his lessons in trauma care and what it means to care for the rural underserved. He is missed now and always.

Not only was Dr. Ochsner a gifted trauma surgeon, he was an exceptional person. His medical knowledge and skill saved my 17 year old daughter in 2006; his positivity and presence saved me. He never let me doubt that I would one day have my daughter Charlee back. And he was right...
Thank you to his family who shared him with us. Forever missed by so many of us

Dr.Ochsner took painstaking care of my 16 yo niece when she had traumatic brain injury from an MVA. As a RN I observed not only his expertise but his amazing compassion. He was the epitome of physician excellence.
Fifteen years later my niece thrives and is a successful young woman. Dr. Ochsner will always be dearly remembered.

Edenfield Family
January 14, 2014
We the Edenfield family are so sorry and so shocked at the loss of this wonderful man and doctor we call our hero. Big daddy O is what my husband Darren Edenfield called him and the reason for that is because He saved my husbands life in 2009.Dr ochsner preformed 3 major surgeries on my husband and they formed a friendship not just a dr patient relationship. we found out that my husband will be needing surgery again and we were so happy to be going to see Dr o this past week on Jan.6 2014 and found out the sad tragic news of his loss and we are in total disbelief not only for his patients but for his family and co workers. You just don't find people like Dr o anymore much less doctors. My husband and Dr o shared stories about their kids we have one daughter and he had one daughter and his 2 boys and it was my daughters 1st prom and Dr o let us go early and trusted that Darren would be well enough at home so we could make that important date in our daughters life and we wanted to see him so bad just to let my husband say Thank You for giving me 5 more years of wonderful life with my daughter and we didn't get the chance. So we as a family hopes this reaches his family t let you knowhow much we loved him and what he meant to us and we hope that you find comfort in knowing their will be no other in our eyes.So now we will trust in his teachings he has gifted his surgeons with to face our new challenges and know that Dr o will be there every step of the way through their hands. Thank you and God bless each and everyone of his loved ones. I remember when he had to rush home to sew up the dog that's how I want to remember him...Love always Darren Becky and Nikki Edenfield

I just read of Dr. Ochsner's passing. I had the privledge of first meeting Dr. Ochsner at the Southern surgical meeting where he served as invited discussant on my research. He was approachable and considerate particularly as I was a resident at the time. From that point forward I saw him at several additional conferences and he greeted me with enthusiasm whenever I ran into him. I did not know him well, but the brief interactions I had with him made a lasting impression. The surgical community has lost a valued and good man. I am very sorry for your loss.

Dear Mrs. Ochsner,
I was a classmate of Gage at Tulane and have seen him at surgical meetings. I was sorry to read of his death in the American College of Surgeons bulletin this month.
He accomplished a lot and is 59 years and was an outstanding representative of Tulane Medical School.
Sincerely,

I am so sorry for your loss to the family of such a wonderful man. Dr. Ochsner saved my son's life on July 28th of 2008. We just found out today of Dr. Ochsner's passing from a another wonderful Dr. name Dr. Miles whom he taught at Memorial and is a physician at Piedmont hospital in Atlanta GA, what a small world. I wasn't surprised that she spoke kindly of him because that was who I had the pleasure of meeting on that awful day in July, when my sons were fitting for there lives and Deon was only 18 at that time. He always had feeling of concern to me and he also should this to my son who admired him immensely. The world is going to be a sad place without him in it, he will be missed and our thoughts are with you all.
I know he is up there smiling on everyone he knew and crossed paths with, so long beautiful soul so long.

I was so sorry to hear about the loss of Gage. I typed many papers for Gage during his fellowship at the Washington Hospital Center. Gage was a wonderful person to work with and a remarkable surgeon. God blessed him with a special talent. I also shared in some fun times with him and others at the annual EAST meetings. After I left the trauma world in 2002, I would call Gage yearly just to say hi. Rest in Peace my friend. My prayers and blessings to Judy and his family.

Dear Judy and Family:
I am so sorry to hear about the passing of such a great physician and boss. I worked with Dr. Ochsner for 6 years in Surgical Education and remember when he first came to Savannah. Elaine Frantz, Lynn (his secretary at the time) and I met him at 8000 Waters Avenue where he first stayed with a "welcome" gift basket. Everyone was so happy that Memorial had hired such a fine physician and trauma surgeon.
He was quite the dancer too. I remember at one of the Surgical Education parties, he and Judy danced to YMCA and my husband was mesmorized that a physician was such a good dancer and so down to earth. He still talks about it to this day.
My heart is sad but my thoughts and prayers are with you. I know the angels were rejoicining when he arrived!
Love to you all,
Debi Lanier

In 1999 Dr. Oshner and I appeared on Trauma in th ER. For many it was a television show, but for me it was reality. He did not let the cameras distract him.( He stayed Dr. Oshner through it all). With the help of God and Dr. Oshner I made it. He was a great encouragement. I am saddened to hear of his passing. May God bless his family.Thank you Dr.Oshner!

I am just reading of the passing of a great physician Dr. Gage Ochsner. I had the pleasure of working with him while at Medstar/Lifestar Ambulance service. He always had a calmness to his voice, and made you feel comfortable in a stressful situation/job. My prayers go out to Judy; who I've had the pleasure of meeting in a local OB/GYN office, as well as the rest of the family.

Dr. Ochsner was the most dedicated and caring physician I ever had the privilege to meet. At our first meeting I had been a RN for 26 years and he stood out among the hundreds of doctors I had worked with over the years.
He cared for my niece, Charlee, when she was injured in a motor vehicle accident. He showed great poise and intellect and kindness. My family has spoken of him so highly over the years and we were saddened to learn of his passing.
We were blessed to know him~

I met Dr Ochsner on the worst day of our lives.(My wife and I) Our son was in a horrible motorcycle accident on July 18,2005. We were called by his staff to come to the ER. When we got there we were met by a head nurse and the Chaplin. When my wife and I saw the Chaplin we knew our son was gone. They took us to see our son and put us into a room with him and Dr Ochsner's staff stayed with us as family arrived. Dr Ochsner came in to speak to us, and even though we were in a haze I still remember how sincere and humble he was. He did every thing he could to save our son and was unable to do so. About a month later I called him, to thank him for trying so hard and having his staff do what ever we asked that horrible night. His first thought was I was a angry parent that wanted to blame the Dr. that wasn't the case.... South side EMS picked him up that night and did every thing they could and so did Dr.Ochsner. I had called to thank him for his efforts. I will never forget him and his family is in our prayers. This man truly cared for people. The world has lost a very dedicated Dr.

It was my pleasure and privilege to be one of Gage's running mates in residency and his friend for over thirty years. It was one of those strange things in life to find out that my wife Kathleen's first trip as a Navy medical programs recruiter was to participate in putting Judy into the Navy. There are very few people I know who lived life like Gage did--their speedometer buried on the peg, living life to the max while having time to thank all of his help after every case in the OR, spend an extra minute with his patients and spend time with his family. He left this side of life way too soon as some do and will be missed by me and many others. Kathleen and I send Gage's family and many friends and patients our thoughts and prayers.
