James Odom Obituary
James (Jim) Edwin Odom - SAVANNAH - Jim died on November 8, 2013 at St. Joseph's Hospital. Born February 25, 1926 in Orlando, Florida, he graduated from Orlando High School in 1944. Jim was active in the band, drama club and served as an Auxiliary Fireman for the City of Orlando. He enlisted in the Navy at the age of 17 and began his service during WWII at the age of 18. He served on the U.S.S. Madison a Benson-Class Destroyer in the Atlantic and Pacific Theatres as a Fire Controlman. After being honorably discharged, Jim continued his education earning a Bachelor's Degree in Electrical Engineering from the University of Florida in 1949. A job offer from Union Camp Corporation brought Jim to Savannah, Georgia in the 1950s where he met the love of his life, Lillian Dowling. They were married in 1957 and were blessed with three children. In 1966, Union Camp transferred him to Montgomery, Alabama where he was instrumental in the design and construction of a new paper mill in Prattville, Alabama. He held various management positions at the Prattville Mill until he was transferred back to Savannah, Georgia in 1981 as Director of Energy Management for Union Camp Corporation. After 40 years of service, he retired in 1990. He is predeceased by his parents, Nelson Earl Odom and Annie Lou Reynolds Odom. In 1965 he lost his precious son, Nelson Earl Odom and in April of this year lost his beloved wife of 55 years, Lillian. He is survived by his two daughters Karen Ann Odom and Christine Odom Clemens (Konrad), his sister Thelma Odom Denmark (Harold), two grandchildren Henry Konrad Clemens, V and Theresa Marie Clemens. A Rosary Service will be held at Fox & Weeks Hodgson Chapel, on Monday, November 11th at 5pm followed by visitation until 7pm. A Mass of Christian Burial will be at Saint James Catholic Church on Tuesday, November 12th. Burial will be at Greenwich Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Saint James Catholic Church or The Marshes of Skidaway Employee Hardship Fund: 95 Skidaway Island Park Drive, Savannah Georgia 31411. The family would like to thank the Cardiac Care Unit of St. Joseph Hospital for their exceptional and compassionate care and the staff of The Marshes of Skidaway.
