With a large family in Bulloch County after spending many summers in Brooklet, I transferred to Southeast Bulloch High School for my junior year (1963 - 1964)from a very large high school in Miami. I'll never forget when walking through the corridors between classes Mr. Godbee would say, "Good morning, Harry" or "Hello, Harry" always calling me by name; always leaving me with the impression he was really glad to see me. Coming from a huge, big city, high school to say I was surprised that he knew who I was and called me by name is an understatement! He was truly interested in others; a remarkable person! His lifetime of achievements will be remembered by all who knew him.

My thoughts and prayers go out to the family. Mr. Godbee was a fair and honest principal. He was stern but you could see the twinkle in his eye, as he stood in the halls of S.E.B. Quietly watching and listening to everything that was going on. He loving earned the name of The Hawk. You will always be lovingly remembered. I had my day in your office as I accounted for a fight. I explained why I had to fight back. I explained to you that sometimes you have to stand up for yourself when you are bullied. You shook your head yes. You smiled and told me to go back to class. From that day on you had my respect. It wasn't given with a stern talk or raising your voice. You simply acknowledged that indeed you do have to stand up for yourself at times. Go rest high on that mountain. Your work here is done.
Class of 1980.

John came into the Ga General Assembly a few years before I did. He was one of the nicest men I meet and served with for the next 10 years fr 1983-93 even though I was a Republican. I know John always had his constituents at heart. He'll be missed by those who knew him.

The Honorable John Godbee's obituary reviews his many accomplishments and contributions to Georgia, and in particular, Southeast Georgia, in the many areas of public service, education, and community development. From the obituary, we can see his tireless efforts to help others and improve our region. What we may not fully understand from reading his accomplishments is being available to provide wise counsel to those in education, business, and government. John was always available to those of us who needed guidance and mentoring. Stepping back from the words of his numerous undertakings, we can pause and reflect on the fact that John impacted thousands of people through his good works and wise counsel.
His wonderful family will miss this leader who did so much for many. He shared his love of his family with us, and that is merely one of many admirable traits we recall about John. While he will be missed, six grandchildren and 12 great grandchildren were certainly touched by a “grand person.” What a mentor and model to have in one's life—John Godbee.

So many of us were touched in some way by this dedicated man of integrity. He was always a pillar of strength for those who were blessed to know him as our Principal or teacher. Prayers going up for the family today and always. What a legacy for future generations to cling to. May God wrap His Arms around all of you today and comfort you with His Love and fill you with the strength needed for the coming days.

Mr. Godbee was very special to the SHS Class of 1953. He was our home room teacher in the ninth grade at SHS - the first male teacher most of us had ever had. Each of us felt we were very special to him and he taught us well. We loved having him attend our class reunions - which he always seemed to enjoy. We'll miss him very much. Our prayers are with his family. Jackie Mikell Yates for the SHS Class of 1953.
