HARRIS, ERNEST RAYMOND
ERNEST (ERNIE) RAYMOND HARRIS Ernie was born in 1920 in Greenwich, England to Lily and Arthur Hardy and passed away peacefully at the age of 96 on June 15, 2016 in Redlands, CA. He was loved and respected by many. His father died when he was an infant and his mother remarried. At age three he and his mother came through Ellis Island to America to start a new life in Taft, CA where his stepfather, Edwin Harris and three stepbrothers lived. When he was eight, the family moved to Long Beach where they experienced the big earthquake. Ernie eventually had a brother Edwin, now deceased and sister, Evelyn English. After high school he worked at Vultee Aircraft Co. until they realized he wasn't a US citizen, so they let him go. He found other work and entered college until Uncle Sam drafted him in Nov. 1941. He served four years as a Meteorologist, two of which were in the South Pacific. He became a US Citizen while serving our country. After his tour in the Army, he attended UCLA and then UC Berkeley graduating in 1949 with a BS degree in Electrical Engineering. He worked for the Bureau of Reclamation working mostly on high voltage transmission line design. He married and has two stepdaughters; Michele Johns and Nancy Utz, a stepson Rick Bauer (deceased), one daughter Heather Harris, seven grandchildren, and 13 great- grandchildren. He left the Bureau of Reclamation for a job with the Air Force in London. When he returned to the states he was hired by the Air Force Ballistic System Division at Norton Air Force Base as a consultant. His last job at Norton was Chief Deployment Engineer for the MX Missile. After retiring from Norton he continued to work several jobs including substitute teaching, forensic engineering, and test engineering for Rockwell International. The end of the Cold War in 1992 ended his working career. He had a love of nature and the outdoors, as well as a love to travel. He and his companion, Kathy were together in love for 32 years. They traveled all over the world seeking out the most beautiful waterfalls in the world. He and Kathy spent many happy hours up at Lake Arrowhead hiking and enjoying their cabin. With his extensive knowledge in electrical engineering, he was able to winterize the cabin with a flick of a switch. Ernie was always interested in the young people around him, sending books or information to help in whatever their interests were. He was very philanthropic, giving generously to many worthy causes. He gave so much to this world to make it a better place. A celebration of his life will be June 25th at Kathy Tilson's home from 1:15 pm to 4:00 pm. For further information, please contact Cortner Chapel. He will be inurned at Riverside National Cemetery. Memorial donations can be made to The Boys and Girls Club, Make-a-Wish Foundation or a charity of your choice.
