Charles Richard "Dick" Gresswell
Charles Richard Gresswell III, age 71, of Claremont, California, died peacefully Friday, February 15, 2013 at his home surrounded by his family. Born April 10, 1941, in San Francisco, California, he was the son of the late Charles Richard Gresswell II and Mary Margaret (Ryan) Gresswell.
Dick was extremely proud of family and is survived by his loving wife of 39 years, Sharon Ruth Gresswell; along with four children; Julia (John) Carkin of Riverside, California, Kristine Gresswell, Charles Gresswell IV and Jennifer (Thai) Gresswell-Sybounheuan all of San Diego, California and one granddaughter, Kelsey. He is also survived by his brother, Jack (Josephine) and their children Mary Ann and Thomas as well as his cousin, Joan Bartmess.
In 1956, at 15 years old, Dick began a long career in the grocery industry with Vons. Over the course of the next 48 years, he held positions ranging from the clerk at the store level to human resources at the main office, culminating his career as the Director of Loss Prevention in August, 2004.
Dick loved to spend time with his family and friends. He was an avid outdoorsman enjoying duck hunting most of all and was a member of: Ducks Unltd, National Rifle Association, SoCal Grocers Association, El Monte Boys' Club, ASIF Int'l, and SoCal Robbery Association. He was also an accomplished fabricator competently working with both metal and wood to include welding, ammunition reloading, and intricate lathe work in his very well apportioned shop. Dick's friends and family will remember him as always there to help however he could.
Sharon and Dick's children would like to thank a dear family friend, Geiselia, who provided outstanding in-home care for Dick over the past 9 months. Without question, she is an angel sent from the Lord whose love and care was a Heavenly blessing.
A Memorial Mass will be held on Saturday, February 23rd at Our Lady of the Assumption Catholic Church at noon. A Reception where Dick's family will greet friends immediately following Mass at the Doubletree by Hilton in Claremont, CA where a light buffet will be served.
