Elbert E. Souders died in Arcadia California on Monday, March 4, 2013, at the age of 94. He passed at his home peacefully, in his sleep and was surrounded by family.

Elbert was married to Irene for 52 years and leaves behind two sons, Elbert and Scott.

Elbert attended numerous Universities including Nebraska Wesleyan University, University of Southern California, and Harvard University. He started his career as Assistant Principal of Arcadia High School in 1955 and became Principal shortly thereafter. He had a long and successful career in education and retired as the Superintendent of schools of Arcadia in 1985.

After retiring as the school Superintendent, Elb became the Director of the Turf Club at the Santa Anita Race Track. He served in many civic capacities including President of the Arcadia Tournament of Roses, Chairman of the Red Cross, President of the Lions Club and President of the Arcadia Recreation Commission.

Sports were also a very important aspect of Elb's life, which is demonstrated by his collegiate accomplishments. While attending Nebraska Wesleyan, he was the state doubles tennis champion. He also lettered three years as the starting guard on the University basketball team.

During World War II Elbert was a Lieutenant Commander in the United States Navy, serving in the South Pacific.

Elb enjoyed a long and productive life, full of associations, with a diverse group of friends and colleagues from all walks of life. He traveled many parts of the world and stayed both mentally and physically active until just preceding his death. He appreciated, most of all, his family, his four grandchildren, his friends, and the City of Arcadia. He leaves behind a loving family, many friends, and wonderful memories and contributions to the City and its' school district. He will be terribly missed by his family, who loved him dearly, and his wonderful group of friends.

Services will be held Saturday, March 16, 2013 at 3:00 p.m. at Church of the Good Shepherd, 400 W. Duarte Rd., Arcadia, CA. In lieu of flowers, please make all donations to the Arcadia High School Performing Arts Center.
