Patricia Leora Carlson
October 1, 1927 January 21, 2013
Patricia Carlson passed from this life in the comfort of her home on January 21, 2013. Pat was born in Los Angeles on October 1, 1927, and attended St. Agnes Elementary and High Schools. During the height of World War II
, Pat met her future husband, James Carlson, on a blind date, prior to his deployment to the Pacific Theatre. Pat and Jim wed after the War, and similar to many young couples of their day, moved their growing family several times during their first years of marriage, before buying the Long Beach home in which they would reside in for their rest of their lives in 1951.
While raising her three children, Kathy, Barbara, and Joe, Pat also contributed her time and talents to St. Cornelius parish in East Long Beach as a choir member, Confraternity of Christian Doctrine instructor, and clerical assistant. The parish community remained as a center of family life and social interaction for Pat over many decades.
After Pat's children graduated from high school, she enrolled in her first classes at Long Beach City College, beginning a educational journey that would eventually result in earning a master's degree in education and a California teaching credential with a special education designation at California State University Long Beach. Scores of special needs students and their families benefited from the loving touch of Pat's embrace and warmth of her supportive smile during her years as a teacher at Mendenhall School in Garden Grove School District. Pat also served as an officer in Pi Lambda Theta, an educational honor society in which she would remain active until recent months.
Pat and Jim traveled extensively in their retirement, favoring cruises on freight liners over more posh arrangements. They also enjoyed trailer camping with friends in the California wilderness, and hosting occasional lunches and dinners in their home.
After Jim's passing three years ago, Pat continued to spend hours visiting with her many friends. Despite the growing physical limitations over her final months, Pat exuded her joy for life, continuing to provide inspiration to everyone she touched.
Patricia was preceded in death by her daughter Kathleen Moore and husband, James Carlson. She is survived by children, Barbara Lassen and Joe Carlson, son-in-law, James Lassen and daughter-in-law, Debbie Hughes, grandchildren, Patrick Moore, Kenneth Moore, Jenny Paul, Jeff Montooth, and Katie Gutierrez, and great-grandchildren, Benjamin Montooth and Alex Gutierrez.
The family wishes to thank Pat's many friends for their support and care. The family appreciates caregiver Lou Macapiniac and neighbors Nick Altenhofen and Merle Munzon, who have been constant sources of strength and assistance.
Patricia Carlson's funeral service will be held at St. Cornelius Church in Long Beach at 11:15 a.m. on Friday, January 25. In lieu of flowers, contributions in Pat's memory may be made to St. Cornelius Parish School, 3330 Bellflower Boulevard, Long Beach, CA 90808. please sign the guestbook
