Donald MacLean Obituary

MACLEAN-Donald Robert MacLean, a resident of Pasadena, born February 4, 1921, died September 9, 2010 at the age of 89. Donald MacLean, the son of Alexander MacLean and Emily Davie MacLean was born in Biggar, Saskatchewan, Canada. His family, all emigrants from Scotland in the early 1900s, homesteaded farms on the Canadian prairies. His father later was a railroad fireman and engineer. Donald moved to Vancouver, becoming a beautician, and then to Arcadia and San Marino, becoming a citizen of the United States. Donald lived and worked in the San Gabriel Valley for many years, with a brief interlude after the death of his first wife, Betty McWhinnie MacLean, working in Hawaii. With two partners, he founded and built the most successful beauty salon of its era in Pasadena, Continental Hair Fashions. His second wife, Ruth Engelhardt MacLean was a Pasadena elementary school teacher for many years and preceded him in death in 2003. Don was highly artistic, an ardent collector, and a lover of all things Scottish and British. In his dedication to honesty and hard work; in his faithful and caring love for his two wives; and in his commitment to his grandchildren, he epitomized the MacLean clan motto: "Virtue Mine Honor." Mr. MacLean is survived by his loving sister, Olive MacLean Belzer who helped care for him with extraordinary dedication; a brother, R.J. MacLean; two stepsons, John David ("Ian") Campbell and Walter Lee Campbell; many nephews and nieces, including Robert Belzer and Sheryl Belzer Fullington. And six grandchildren: A.J., Christopher, Emily, Marguerite, Stephanie, and Walter Campbell II. Services will be held 11:00 a.m.., Saturday, September 18, 2010 at Mountain View Mortuary and Cemetery, Chapel of the Gardens, 2300 N. Marengo Avenue, Altadena, CA 91001.
