Grace Minda McLeod was born January 16, 1919, in Elmhurst, Illinois. She was the youngest of seven children born to Gustave and Clara (Carlson) Holmes, who had emigrated to Chicago from Sweden. Alver, her oldest brother 18 years older than Grace-reminisced that she used to push open his door and crawl in for friendly visits when he was studying in his room. She grew up, a happy tomboy who had all kinds of
adventures during a very happy childhood with her friends Louise, Birgit and Astrid. She graduated from York High School and looked forward to every yearly reunion to meet with old friends. She moved to Pasadena in 1935 with her parents. She attended Immanuel Baptist Church in Pasadena, where she met her future husband, James McLeod, and married him on February 27, 1942. When he returned from his years in the Philippines during World War II, they resided in Altadena and raised their children. She attended Bethany Church of Sierra Madre in her later years and was active in the missionary society.
Grace went to the joy of her Heavenly home on April 5, 2014, leaving her family saddened by her loss but knowing they will join her in God's time. Grace was predeceased by her brothers and sisters, Roy, Alver, Stanley, Paul, Ruth and Edith, her baby daughter Lois Ruth in 1951, and her husband James McLeod in 1992. She is survived by her children, Janet Mackie, Karen Burruss (Gary), and Jim McLeod; grandchildren Eric Mackie (Jocelyn), Evan Mackie (Nicola), Shannon Brock (Chris), Skye Miller (Jon); and great-grandchildren Zachary Brown (Rebecca), Dylan and Davis Brock, Connor and NatashaRene Boring-Mackie and Reid and Ivy Miller.
Grace was interred with her husband at Mountain
View Cemetery in Altadena after private family services.
