1941–2014
Morro Bay, Calif., resident Janice Estelle McPhate (Hellman), age 73, passed away peacefully at 4:04 a.m. on Aug. 9, surrounded by immediate family at French Hospital Medical Center in San Luis Obispo. Janice was born in 1941, in Gary, Ind., to father Johan Victor Arnold Hellman and mother Estelle Leocodia Hellman (Oskins). Following a decade-long courtship, Janice wed her high school sweetheart, James Gregory McPhate, on Oct. 21, 1967, at Our Lady of the Rosary Cathedral in San Bernardino. Janice secured employment at Community Hospital of San Bernardino in 1969, ultimately ascending to administrative director of the hospital's clinical laboratory. Janice and Jim permanently relocated to Morro Bay in 2001. Along with Jim and her brother David, she was a partner in HMH Antiques, a family business specializing in the sale of antique tools, glassware and sporting goods. Janice is survived by her husband Jim, sons Chris and Tim, grandsons Connor and Duncan, and brothers David, Victor and Carl. In lieu of flowers, donations to the in Janice's memory are encouraged.
