Kris Michael "Mike" Shanteler
49, of Redlands, California, died July 3, 2012, in Midland, Texas from a myocardial infarction brought on by sepsis.
He was born November 23, 1962 in Redlands, California, the son of the late Kris Arthur Shanteler, the late Barbara Ann Shanteler, and Marsha Giese-Skogsbergh. He was the oldest of 3 siblings. On April 12, 1999, he married Kathy Morgan.
Mike served in the U.S. Army as a Radio Teletype Operator from 1980 to 1984. He was decorated with the Good Conduct Medal, Army Service Ribbon, Expert Badge M16 Rifle, Air Assault Badge and Multi-National Forces Observer Medal. After his discharge, he was employed at Reliable Grinding in San Bernardino, CA.
From 1989 to 1995, Mike proudly served in the United States Marine Corps earning the rank of Sergeant. His primary specialty was as an 1161 Refrigeration Mechanic. Mike served in the Persian Gulf War during Operation Desert Storm. He was decorated from the USMC with the Rifle Qualification Badge (Expert 2d awd); Pistol Qualification Badge (Expert); Good Conduct Medal (2d awd); Multi-National Observer Medal; National Defense Service Medal; Sea Service Deployment Medal; Southwest Asia Service Medal; Kuwait Liberation Medal; Certificate of Commendation (2d awd) and the Navy Unit Commendation Medal for Meritorious Achievement.
Mike was employed with the Redlands Unified School District as the Foreman of the HVAC/R shop from 1995 until 2011. He served as the Vice President and then President of the Redlands Education Support Professionals Association as well as the Director of Maintenance and Operations for RUSD. He served as a Delegate to the National Education Association Representative Assembly, he was a CTA State Council member, CAL-ESP member, Citrus Belt Uniserv Board Member, Chair of the National Education Association Veteran's Caucus, and served on the Little Hoover Commission
He is survived by his loving wife, Kathy Morgan-Shanteler, his daughter, Renee Shanteler, his sisters Tina Shanteler, Colorado, and Brihana Shanteler-Walker, Oregon; his second mom Marsha Giese-Skogsbergh, Oregon, his in-laws Larry & Kate Morgan, Mentone; his nephew Tommy Shanteler and nieces Raeven Shanteler and Bethany Evans, all of Colorado, Alyssa Chevelle of Oregon, his great-nephews Caleb Lee and Liam Michael of Colorado as well as many other nieces, nephews, cousins, aunts and uncles from coast to coast.
Mike was preceded in death by his parents, Kris Arthur Shanteler and Barbara Smith-Shanteler; and his grandparents, Louis & Rita Shanteler and Joseph & Pauline Smith.
Funeral Services with full military honors will be on Saturday, July 14 at 1:00 p.m. at Montecito Valley View Chapel, 3520 E. Washington Street, Colton, CA 92324. Viewing will be on Friday, July 13, also at Montecito Valley View Chapel from 4:00 to 8:00.
