Dr Marvin V. Snell died peacefully under the care of VNA Hospice on Wed., Feb. 6 at his home in La Verne, CA after a long struggle with Parkinson's disease.
Dr. Snell practiced family medicine in the La Verne/Pomona area for 40 years. He was a lifelong member of the La Verne Church of the Brethren and served for many years as director of Student Health Services for the University of La Verne. He was known for his fluency in Spanish, thanks to three years as director of the outpatient clinic at the Church of the Brethren hospital in Castaner, Puerto Rico, in the mid 1950s. Dr. Snell was also known for helping low-income families to receive adequate medical care, his community service in various capacities in devotion to the City of La Verne, his service as Chief of Staff at Pomona Valley Community Hospital, as a longtime member and onetime chair of the Brethren Hillcrest Homes board, and for his devotion to numerous causes (especially peace and environmental efforts). He enjoyed several hobbies and activities, including flying his Cessna 172, restoring early 1940s Lincoln Continentals, golfing, traveling, and spending time with friends.
Dr. Snell is survived by his devoted wife of 35 years, Marie Shibuya Snell of La Verne, CA; three children, Tim (Dawn) Snell of Porterville, CA; Diane (Larry) Offner of Placentia, CA; Krista Singleton of Menifee, CA; two step-children, David (Susan) Shibuya of La Verne, CA, and Steven (Nancy) Shibuya of Jackson Hole, WY; three brothers, Arthur (Hazel) Snell of McPherson, KS; Wayne (Verna) Snell of Visalia, CA; and Galen (Ruth) Snell of Reedley, CA; six grandchildren and five great-grandchildren; numerous nieces and nephews; many dear friends; and his beloved dog, Solo. He was preceded in death by his parents, Ernest R. Snell in 1965 and Iva E. Snell in 1994; one brother, Dale Snell in 1979; and his former wife, Katherine Eisenhardt Snell in 1992.
The family would like to thank the following for their wonderful service and devotion to Dr. Snell: all the staff at Hillcrest, the many friends who came to visit, the amazing and wonderful caregivers from VNA Homecare, and the nurses and staff from VNA Hospice.
A memorial service will be held for Dr. Snell on Sat., Feb. 23 at 2:00 PM at the Meetinghouse at Hillcrest Retirement Community, 2701 Mountain View Dr. in La Verne, CA. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Heifer Project International or to the .
