Philip V. Banales
Entered into paradise on Saturday, February 2, 2013 at the age of 87. He passed away peacefully at his home surrounded by his family. He is survived by his wife of 69 years, Lydia, his children, Philip Jr., Dolores, Estella Belmudez, Daniel, Christine Perez and Steven (Blanca) as well as 9 grand- children and 3 greatgrandchildren. He is also survived by one sibling, his sister Clara B. Lopez of Escondido, California.
He was born on February 5, 1925 in Pomona to Wenceslao and Margarita Banales. He attended Pomona public schools and was a lifelong resident. During his youth he enjoyed sports, especially baseball and boxing.
A proud U.S. Army veteran of WWII, he served from June 1943 to January 1946. He was assigned as an Anti-Aircraft Machine Gunner, sharpshooter with the 127th Anti-Aircraft Artillary Battalion in the European Theater of Operations. He served in the battles and campaigns of Ardennes, Rhineland, Central Europe, and Ground Combat in England. A commendation was received from Britain for his participation with the 127th AAA Battalion in the "Battle of the Flying Bomb" in Southern England. Decorations and Citations included American Campaign Medal, European African Middle Eastern Campaign Medal, Good Conduct Medal and World War II Victory Medal.
Upon honorable discharge from the U.S. Army, he began raising his family and entered the workforce in construction and truck driving with Ace Pipeline Construction Company in Pomona. He retired from the company at the age of 63.
He was a man of God and his strong faith was exhibited throughout his life. He made Sacred Heart Church in Pomona his home church. He served as an usher at the 7 am mass for over 25 years and was well known to the Sacred Heart community, neighbors and families. He participated in the annual procession for Our Lady of Guadalupe as well as the re-enactment of Jesus Christ's 'washing of the feet' of the disciples during lent, and many church fiestas throughout the years.
A dedicated husband, father, grand-father and great grand-father, his family was his pride and joy. His sense of humor, his great big smile and his laugh will be missed by all who knew and loved him.
Rosary will be held at 6pm on Sunday, February 9, 2013 at Todd Memorial Chapel, Pomona.
Funeral Mass will be held at 9am on Monday, February 10, 2013 at St. Joseph Church, Pomona.
Interment to follow at Holy Cross Cemetery in Pomona, California.
