Terry Hammack, long-time advocate for the homeless and Whittier resident, passed away on February 4, 2013, at the age of 64. Terry, a veteran of the Vietnam era, served his country as a Sargent in the US Army. In 1999, Terry was a founding member of the Board of Directors of Whittier Area One Stop Center, a homeless
shelter and recovery center that is now called Whittier Area First Day Coalition. Homeless when he began serving on the Board of Directors, Terry rooted in his life experiences, offered a unique perspective to the organization. Terry first served as the Housing Director and then served as Whittier's Outreach Manager. He cared deeply about helping the people in his community recover from homelessness. Recently, due to health issues, Terry became the Night Supervisor of the shelter, dealing with any emergencies and ensuring that the needs of residents were addressed.
In addition to serving on First Day's Board of Directors, Terry served the Whittier community in various capacities. Community organizations benefiting from his participation included the Rio Hondo Temporary Home's Board of Directors, LUNA Recovery's Board of Directors, Whittier's Senior Center's Advisory Committee, a member of HOT (Hispanic Outreach Taskforce) and a member of NAMI (National Alliance on Mentally Illness).
Terry's passion to help others and his kind heart made him an invaluable member of the community. Terry's passing is a heartfelt loss, and he will be remembered as someone who always put the needs of others in front of his own. He will be truly missed by all who knew him and his works.
He is survived by his wife Marilyn, and by all his family members of choice, at Whittier's First Day.
A Memorial Service will be held on Saturday, March 02 at 2:00 p.m. at First Christian Church on 6355 South Greenleaf Ave., Whittier CA 90601. The community is welcome. Please bring a photo, a story, or a memory to share.
