Thomas von Seydewitz Obituary
Thomas "Tom" Michael von Seydewitz
March 9,1951 -
March 29, 2013

Thomas von Seydewitz passed away early on the morning of March 29, Good Friday, at age 62, following a sudden and unexpected illness. He left us peacefully, surrounded by family and loved ones who kept hopeful vigil at his hospital bedside for several days.
Tom was born on March 9, 1951, in Pasadena, CA, the youngest of three children born to Fred and Luella Seydewitz of Altadena, CA. He attended Loma Alta Elementary School, Eliot Junior High, John Muir High, and California State
University, Los Angeles, earning his BS in Psychology. Tom went on to earn a Master's of Science in Psychology. He later earned a Certificate in Marriage and Family Therapy, opening a small practice in Montrose, CA.
In 1982 Tom married Lori Jeffries Aldrich, with whom he enjoyed a happy and loving relationship for 28 years until her passing in 2010. Tom became a devoted stepfather to her two young children, Amy and Alex, actively participating in their upbringing. They made their home in San Marino, later relocating to Glendale. To honor Tom's German heritage, he and Lori added the "von" to their last name, earlier dropped by ancestors coming to America.
Tom was a natural athlete, excelling in Central Altadena Little League. He once struck out 15 batters in a row in a game at Farnsworth Park, where he and his brother John spent many long summer days. He was a lifelong sports fan, passionately rooting for the Dodgers, Lakers, Trojans, and Raiders. Tom loved the outdoors, often hiking the trails of the San Gabriel Mountains, and also enjoying the beach and ocean, spending many weekends and holidays at Lori's family's beach house at Rincon Point in Santa Barbara.
Tom was known for his kind, gentle spirit, his sense of humor, and for being an understanding and patient listener. These traits served him well throughout his career at Goodwill Industries as an Employment Coordinator for the developmentally disabled and in his Marriage and Family Therapy Practice. Many of Tom's clients have spoken to the profound positive impact his counseling had on their lives. He was also known for his love of animals, donating generously to numerous animal welfare charities.
Tom will be remembered as a sweet brother, devoted son, loyal husband, kind stepfather, and wise counselor. He was preceded in death by his father, Fred Seydewitz, and his wife, Lori. He leaves behind his stepchildren Amy and Alex Aldrich, his mother, Luella Seydewitz, his brother John Seydewitz (Mari Perini), his sister Julie MacNeil (Don), nieces Kelli and Kari Seydewitz, Kathleen Hawkins (Hunter), Jennifer Danenberg (Kevin), nephew Michael MacNeil (Kathrin), and two great-nieces Sophia and Scarlett MacNeil, and many other family members who deeply mourn his passing.
A Memorial Service to honor Tom's life will be held at Mountain View Cemetery, Sunrise Chapel, 2400 North Fair Oaks Avenue in Altadena, on Monday, April 8, at 12:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the American Humane Society.
