Sylvia Young
Jan. 13, 1922 - Oct. 4, 2012

Sylvia Young, age 90, passed away
peacefully at her home in West Covina on October 4, 2012. She was deeply loved and will be missed by her family, her church, and the community.
Sylvia was born in Chicago, Illinois on January 13, 1922, as the second of four children. She graduated from Pepperdine College and later went on to obtain her teaching certificate. She married Robert O. Young on July 9, 1949. They settled initially in Los Angeles and had two daughters. Bob and Sylvia moved their family to West Covina in 1957, where Sylvia fulfilled her childhood goal of becoming a teacher. She taught first and second grade at Merced School until she retired.
Following her retirement, Sylvia stayed busy. She served multiple terms as an elder at the West Covina Community Presbyterian Church, where she also sang in the choir, co-directed the Logos program, coordinated inspirational speakers, led Bible study groups, and participated in countless other programs. She was active at the chapter, state and international levels of Delta Kappa Gamma, a professional honorary society of women educators. She was also a valued member of the Azusa Pacific University Scholarship Auxiliary. She enjoyed cruise vacations and gambling trips with a group of "golden girls". She lived independently until the time of her death and was always on the go.
Sylvia is survived by her daughter, Lori Partrick, four grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband Bob, her daughter Judy, and her three brothers.
A memorial service will be held on Saturday, December 1, at 1:00 p.m., at Community Presbyterian Church, 540 East Vine Avenue, West Covina, California 91790. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made in Sylvia's name to the Community Presbyterian Church in West Covina; to Delta Kappa Gamma, or to the Robert O. and Sylvia Young Scholarship Endowment at Azusa Pacific University, Office of University Advancement.
