Allen passed away on April 20, 2014 at age 82 in San Bernardino where he had lived for 55 years. Born in Moorcroft, Wyoming to Olin and Edith Gresham, the family settled in El Centro, California where Allen grew up along with his older brother Olin Jr.
After graduating high school in 1949, Allen attended Occidental College and majored in Political Science. While there he was elected student body president and played on the basketball team. Following college, Allen attended Stanford University Law School obtaining a JD degree in 1956.
He served in the U.S. Army for two years before coming to San Bernardino in 1959 to join the law firm of Lonergan and Jordan, now known as Gresham, Savage, Nolan and Tilden.
Allen and his wife Clara were members of the Presbyterian Church in San Bernardino and were part of that Church's Mariners Group.
Allen was a Civil Litigator and served as President of the San Bernardino County Bar Association in 1969. He was also a fellow of the American College of Trial Lawyers. Prior to his retirement from practicing law for over 44 years with the same firm where he spent much of career as managing partner, Allen received the John B. Surr Award from the San Bernardino County Bar Association for his outstanding accomplishments as an attorney.
Active in numerous community activities, Allen served as a trustee of the S.B. Community College District for 37 years, member of the Kiwanis Club since 1960 where he was local club president and later served as Lieutenant Governor, director of the Arrowhead United Way in 1964, director of the San Bernardino County Symphony Association from 1967 to 1973, and rejoining the board again in 1989 as president, as a member and director of Inland Action, and board member of St. Bernardine Medical Center Foundation and Shrine Hospital for Children.
Allen was a Mason since 1956 and served as Master of San Bernardino Lodge in 1967. He began service in the Grand Lodge of California in 1965 and was elected Grand Master of Masons in California from 1996-1997. He achieved the 33° in Scottish Rite and served for several years as the head of its San Bernardino Valley.
Allen is survived by Clara, his wife of 60 years, sons Bruce (Valerie) and Brooks Gresham as well as five grandchildren.
Allen was one-of-a-kind, excelling in everything he did, and serving as an example for all of us to follow as best we can. He relished contact with friends and family and we are uniquely blessed to have known him.
Services will be held on Saturday, May 24, 2014 at 11:00 AM at Scottish Rite, Valley of San Bernardino, 4400 North Varsity Avenue, San Bernardino, CA 92407. A reception will follow.
