93, a Claremont Manor resident, passed away peacefully on May 1, 2013.
He is survived by his four children: Marianne Nardella of Moscow, PA; Robert Brustad, of Fort Collins, CO; William Brustad, of Perris, CA; and John Brustad of Dana Point, CA. He is also survived by his daughters-in-law, Lorraine Brustad and Vone Brustad, son-in-law, Mark Nardella, five grand- hildren, Erik Brustad, Heather Brustad, Erin Nardella, Mike Nardella, Robert C. Brustad, two nephews, George Brustad and Harry Beck, and a niece, Lois Hesse. He was preceded in death by his wife, Kathleen Brustad, in 2008, and by his brother, George A. Brustad in 1985.
John was born March 3, 1920 in Minot, ND. He received a bachelor's degree in Chemical Engineering from North Dakota State University in 1943, and a Master's Degree in Mathematics from the University of Southern California in 1950. John was a sergeant in the US Army during World War II and served in the Pacific Theater.
Following World War II, John moved to Long Beach, CA where he met his wife, Kathleen O'Callahan. They were married for fifty-seven years. He worked for General Dynamics, Pomona Division, as a missile design engineer from 1960 until his retirement in 1987. John particularly enjoyed playing poker and taking backpacking trips with his family. During his retirement years, John volunteered with the American Red Cross, Reading for the Blind, and several other organizations. He was an active member of the University Club of Claremont and golfed on a regular basis. His family and friends will miss his wonderful sense of humor and his active mind. A Celebration of Life for John will be held Monday, May 6th, at Claremont Manor at 10 a.m. In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent to VITAS Hospice Care, Covina, California.
