Dr. Verna Lucille
Sept. 17, 1911 to Aug. 24, 2013
She was born on Sept. 17, 1911 in Highland, Calif to Christopher and Effie Robson. She had 3 brothers, Eugene, Marion and Ernest, two sisters, Irene Bentley and Christina Rees and they are all deceased.
Verna attended the grammer schools in Highland from the first grade to the ninth grade. Grades 10 to 12 were at the San Bernardino High School.
In 1928 Verna was baptized at the Loma Linda Seventh-day Adventist church. She went to Pacific Union College in Angwin, Ca and took the premedical course and graduated in 1934. She decided to come to Loma Linda and attend the College of Medical Evangelists, which is now Loma Linda University School of Medicine. She graduated in the 1937 class.
Dr. Verna interned for a year at Boulder Sanitarium and Hospital, then on to Emmanuel Missionary College, which is now Andrews University in Michigan to be their Staff physician for 3 years. She went to the SDA Hospital in Karachi, Pakistan as a Staff Physician for 3 ½ years. While there she was the Doctor for the royal family from Hunza. The Queen of Hunza invited Dr. Verna and some other doctors and nurses to be their guests in Hunza. Mrs. Henrickson wrote a book, "Holiday in Hunza" about their adventures.
When Dr. Verna returned to the United States, she went to the Univ. of Calif in Berkeley and got her degree in Public Health, then worked for the County Health Dept. in San Bernardino.
She moved to Sacramento and worked for the County Health Dept. in the Contagious Disease Control Dept. for 11 years.
Dr. Verna retired in 1972 and moved to Angwin, Calif. In 1982 she married her old boyfriend from PUC school days, Harold Towsley. They were both 70 years old. In 1992 Harold and Verna moved to Loma Linda into the Linda Valley Villa. Harold died in June, 1993. Dr. Verna stayed at the Linda Valley Villa and enjoyed her life there very much. In 1998 Dr. Verna Towsley married Judge Vando Unger. He celebrated his 90th birthday a few days later with a big party. Van and Verna lived on his ranch in Mentone for a year. Then they moved back to the Linda Valley Villa. They had 8 happy years together before he died.
In 2006 she moved to La Sierra to live with her step-daughter, Dorothea Myers. She enjoyed Dorothea's family of children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren to entertain her!!
She moved into the Advent Life Care Home in Loma Linda in her last days. She was happy with Ruddy and Letty and their staff of caregivers until she passed away on Aug. 24, 2013. She was almost 102 years old!
She is survived by her niece, Marilyn Sellers and Jim, Great-niece Shasta Robson, and nephew Robert Robson. Step-daughter Dorothea Ragsdale and Don, Step-son Robert Towsley and Margie, and
Eleven grandchildren, 20 great-grandchildren, and 7 great- great grandchildren.
Memorial Services will be at the Campus Hill SDA Church in Loma Linda on Sept. 21, 2013 on Saturday afternoon at 3 p.m. In lieu of flowers Dr. Verna would like donations made to the Worthy Students Fund at Pacific Union College in Angwin, Calif. or La Sierra University in Riverside, Calif. She will be buried in the St. Helena Cemetery at a later date.
