Leonard J. "Smokey" Smolsky, 87, of Levittown, passed away Sunday at home surrounded by his family.
Born and raised in Minersville and formerly of Philadelphia, he moved to Middletown Township in 1957.
He was a member of Queen of the Universe Parish.
Leonard served in the Marine Corps from 1944 until 1946, where he was wounded at Iwo Jima and was awarded a Purple Heart.
He started his working career as a supervisor for the Reading Railroad and later moved onto the New Hope-Ivyland Railroad. He then founded the SMS Railroad.
He was involved in politics with the Democratic party his whole life and worked as a Middletown Township supervisor and as a justice of the peace.
Leonard was a member of the Knights of Columbus, St. Joseph the Worker Council 4215, VFW John Billington Post 6495, Fraternal Order of Eagles and American Legion Post 960, Levittown. He was also a member of various golf leagues.
He enjoyed talking to anyone who was close enough to listen to him.
Leonard was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 65 years, Marie Steffanic Smolsky; and a son, Vincent R.
He was the loving father of Marie D. Rooney (Tucker), Naples, Fla., David Smolsky Sr. (Frances C. Police), Port Charlotte, Fla., and Raymond J. Smolsky, Frackville; grandchildren, Dina Marie Henon, Patti Ann Smolsky, Katie Lynn Smolsky, Dawn Gale, David Smolsky II, Cyndy Smolsky, Steven Smolsky and John Minieka; 11 great-grandchildren; a sister, Beatrice "Pepper" Rumpf; nieces and nephews.
Family and friends are invited to call from 3 to 5 p.m. Thursday at James J. Dougherty Funeral Home Inc., 2200 Trenton Road, Levittown. Interment will be held privately. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions in his name may be made to Minersville Independent Hunting and Fishing Camp, 2805 Village Road, Orwigsburg, PA 17961. Lenny will be dearly missed by everyone at camp. We were all blessed to share time with him at camp. It will always be a bit quieter without him. RIP Lenny.

Smokey, as all of his golf friends called him including me, was fun. Always ready and willing to give free golf lessons, whether you wanted them or not. lol
