B. Catherine Becker

B. Catherine Becker, 82, of Bradenton, Fla., formerly of Frackville, died Dec. 13 at home.

Born in Bronx, N.Y., March 4, 1925, she was a daughter of the late Edwin and Catherine Massey. She was a graduate of Hamburg High School.

She was employed as a Frackville correspondent for the Shenandoah Evening Herald during the '50s and '60s. Later, she was the librarian for the Frackville Library. She also worked for the Frackville borough as a clerk in the sewer office, as well as several retail stores at the Schuylkill Mall, Frackville.

Catherine was a former member of St. Joseph Church, Frackville. She belonged to various women's clubs in the Frackville area. She relocated to Florida in 1985 upon her retirement.

She was a member of Mary Queen of Martyrs Church, Sarasota, Fla. There, she participated in the church choir and volunteered her time in various church functions and the church-sponsored soup kitchen. She was an active member in The Friends of the Library Group for the South Manatee Library, serving a term as president. She was also an active member of the Bra denton Garden Club.

She was preceded in death, in addition to her parents, by her husband of 59 years, Peter L. Becker; two sisters, Fannie Samo and Ann Rothenberger; a brother, Thomas Massey.

Surviving are three children, David, husband of Nancy, Bloomsburg, Jane, with whom she resided in Bradenton, Fla., and Marianne, wife of Martin Cuff, Shenandoah Heights; two grandchildren, Gretchen and Jonathan Becker.

Funeral Mass was held Dec. 19, 2007, at Our Lady Queen of Martyrs church, Sarasota, Fla. Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 a.m. Friday at St. Joseph Church, Frackville. Interment will be in St. Joseph Church Cemetery following Mass. Thomas M. Sullivan Funeral Home, Frackville, is in charge of arrangements.
