Harold G. "Chick" O'Hazzo, 90, of Mahanoy City, died Monday morning at Hazleton General Hospital.
Born in Beaver Meadows, he was a son of the late John and Susan Kaschak O'Hazzo.
He was a 1941 graduate of Hazleton High School and a graduate of Penn State University
. He also attended Bucknell, Syracuse and Fordham universities.
He served with the Navy during both World War II
and the Korean War
and was a gunners mate on the USS Adirondack.
O'Hazzo was a long time teacher, guidance counselor and athletic director for Mahanoy Area High School.
He was a member of St. Mary Byzantine Catholic Church and American Legion Post 74, both of Mahanoy City, Knights of Columbus, Civil Service Police Commission, McAdoo VFW
, McAdoo Fire Company and Locust Valley Rod and Gun Club.
He was an avid fisherman and enjoyed sharing his catch of the day with his friends.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Eleanor, in 2007; daughter, Diane; and brother, John.
Surviving are two sons, John R. "Richie" O'Hazzo, at home, and Robert "Chick" O'Hazzo, Tresckow; two daughters, Karen Makowiec, and Jeanne Ryan and her husband, Gary, all of Mahanoy City; a sister, Dorothy Maguschak, New Coxeville; two brothers, Eugene, St. Luke's Manor, Hazleton, and Raymond, Florida; sister-in-law, Lydia O'Hazzo, Hershey; nine grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; nieces and nephews.
Relatives and friends are invited to his funeral at 10 a.m. from David D. Jarrett Funeral Home, Mahanoy City. Divine Liturgy with Office of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:30 a.m. Friday by the Rev. James Carroll at St. Mary Byzantine Catholic Church. Interment will follow at Ss. Peter and Paul Cemetery, New Coxeville. Friends may call from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home with Parastas at 7:30 p.m. and from 9 a.m. until the time of services Friday.
