Howard G. "Snick" Benfield, 88, a resident of Broad Mountain Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, Frackville, formerly of Mount Carmel and Centralia, died Monday at Lehigh Valley Hospital, Allentown area.
Born Dec. 21, 1925, in Ashland State Hospital, he was a son of the late William and Minnie Wills Benfield.
Snick was a retired coal miner and also was employed for many years as a bar steward at Centralia American Legion Post 608 and Mount Carmel American Legion Post 91.
Snick was preceded in death by his first wife, Dorothy Perry Benfield, in 1984.
He married his second wife, Ann Valent Benfield, Mount Carmel, on July 8, 1988.
He was a graduate of Hubert Eicher High School, Centralia.
He was a Navy veteran of World War II
. He served aboard the LST-493 during the European Campaign. He received the following citations, European Theatre Campaign with one star, Pacific Theatre Ribbon, American Theatre Ribbon and World War II Victory Medal.
Snick was a member of Zion United Methodist Church, Aristes, a life member of both Centralia American Legion Post 608 and Ashland Veterans of Foreign Wars
Post 7654. He is also a member of Mount Carmel American Legion Post 91.
Snick took pride in being a veteran and devoted his time every year preparing for Memorial Day placing flags on veterans' graves in local cemeteries.
Snick was a great artist and always enjoyed drawing cards and posters for his family and friends. In his younger years, Snick enjoyed sports especially playing baseball, pool shooting and was a bowler for many years. He also enjoyed dancing and Polkas.
Later in life, Snick was selected and trained as a Peer for Residents in St. Catherine's Long Term Care Unit, Ashland, and Broad Mountain Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, Frackville.
He was preceded in death by four brothers, William, Calvin, Lester and Richard Benfield; and a sister, Bertha Clews.
Surviving, in addition to his wife, Ann, Frackville, are a son, Tony Waslesyn, Sanford, Fla.; a granddaugher, Nichole Davis and her husband, Richard; two great-grandchildren, Noah and Nicholette; two stepchildren, Donald Zimmerman Jr. and his wife, Christine, and their daughter, Elizabeth, Frackville, and Eleanor Sanayka and her son, Nicholas, Frackville; nieces and nephews.
Religious services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at Joseph J. Stutz Inc. Funeral Home, 40 S. Market St., Mount Carmel, Joseph J. Stutz III, supervisor. The Rev. Joan A. Brown will officiate. Interment will be private at Indiantown Gap National Cemetery, Annville. Visitation will be held from 9 a.m. until the time of the service at the funeral home.
