James J. Palko

James Joseph Palko, San Bernardino, Calif., died Sept. 7.

Born May 3, 1928, in Pottsville, he was a son of the late John and Anna Palko.

After graduating high school as a Pennsylvania State Champion in gymnastics, he served in the Army during the Korean War.

He was the first in his family to graduate from Penn State University. Shortly after graduation, he began his 28-year career at U.S. Steel, Lorain, Ohio.

James met his wife, Verna Lee Wilson, whom he married in 1962.

After his retirement, James worked for the IRS and moved to San Bernardino, Calif., in 1989.

He was an active volunteer at St. Bernardine's Medical Center and Loma Linda VA Hospital.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by sisters, Dorothy and Margaret; and brothers, John (Frances) and Michael (Betty.)

Surviving, in addition to his wife of 51 years, Verna, are daughters, Barbara Bryan, Oakdale, Calif., and Carol, San Bernardino, Calif.; sister, Shirley Hudock (Francis), Lancaster; four nieces and four nephews.

Mass will be held at 11 a.m. Monday at Our Lady of the Assumption Catholic Church, San Bernardino. Interment to follow at 2:30 p.m. at Riverside National Cemetery.
