John Dougherty Obituary

June 16, 2013

John Vincent Dougherty Jr., 36, of Jacksonville, Fla., was unexpectedly taken from us Sunday.

Born Dec. 16, 1976, he was a son of John and Jeanie Dougherty, Camp Hill.

John graduated from Exeter High School, Reading, and attended Penn State University, where he studied mechanical electrical engineering.

He moved to Jacksonville in 2002 and was working at Publix Super Markets Inc.

John will always be remembered as a guy who would never say no to a friend in need, who was known as "Mr. Fixit" and could build or repair anything. His knowledge was endless and his ability to figure out and solve any problem was uncanny. His passion for nature, the beach and animals defined him. John always said, "I love animals because they never judge you and they offer unconditional love."

To all who knew him and to all the lives he touched he will be forever missed.

His love for people and life, his smile, his amazing ability to make anyone laugh, the stories and memories we all share will always be in our hearts.

He was the most wonderful friend, son, brother and uncle anyone could ask for. John would often say, "life is one big cycle of beginnings and endings, and when I go, celebrate my life." John lived life to the fullest and always found the positive in every situation. "Tomorrow will be a new day and that's the beauty of it, nothing lasts forever."

John is survived by and will be forever remembered by his best friend and dad, John Dougherty Sr.; his mother, Jeanie Dougherty; two sisters, Kathleen Klingaman and Suzanne Winkler; two brothers, Rick Klingaman and Brad Winkler; his girlfriend, Emily Atkinson; four nieces, Megan, Leah, Ava and Grace; two nephews, Owen John and Bradley Jay; 14 aunts and uncles; 46 cousins; and countless friends.

A viewing will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. today at Corey-Kerlin Funeral Home, 940 Cesery Blvd., Jacksonville. A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at First Christian Church of the Beaches, 2125 Oceanfront and Seagate, Neptune Beach, Fla., and a reception to follow at the RITZ, 185 Third Ave. North, Jacksonville Beach, Fla. In lieu of flowers, the family is requesting that donations be made to Publix Super Markets, 7117 Merrill Road, Jacksonville, FL 32277, 904-744-7983 or Jacksonville Human Society, 8464 Beach Blvd., Jacksonville, FL 32216.

"In Memory"
I'd like the memory of me to be
a happy one.
I'd like to leave an afterglow of smiles when life is done.
I'd like to leave an echo whispering softly down the ways, of happy times and laughing times and bright and sunny days.
I'd like the tears of those who grieve, to dry before the sun of happy memories that I leave
when life is done.

I moved to Tampa, Fl in early 2001. I heard through friends that John had moved to Jacksonville. I remember seeing him a few years after graduation, before I left for a teaching job in Fl. We talked about some of our childhood adventures in Crestwood. He was a smart and funny guy. I wish I would have looked him up, living in the same state. You always put things like that on the side burner thinking you have all the time in the world. I feel for his family and close friends. I have no doubt he's sharing stories and jokes in a better place.

John had an infectious personality. I remember him teacher Suzanne and I how to play soccer when we were younger. His family and my family mirrored each other when it came to ages of kids and gender. I grew up with John. My mom and his mom were best friends. I will miss him dearly. My heart and prayers go out to his entire family and friends. He will be missed, but not forgotten.

Much Love, John.

I knew John "back in the day" when he lived on Hawk St with Mark, and I also attended Penn State Berks the same time as John. He was always such a cool, laid back guy, very funny, quirky and very kind and humble. I can still picture his long hair pulled back, his lip ring, and hemp necklace- he really was the coolest guy! He was always smiling, and for some reason I can still hear him saying, "right on, right on", but running it into one word, "rightonrighton!":)And I can still hear his chuckle. I can see on his Facebook page, just how loved he was, by so very many people. To his dad, girlfriend, sisters, the rest of his family & many, many friends. I am so very sorry for your pain and loss. May you find comfort in each other, and healing in your remembrances of John, and the passing of time. Much Love.
