Susan I. Cheruka

Susan I. Cheruka, 90, of Minersville, passed away peacefully Wednesday at York Terrace Golden Living Center.

Born in Pottsville, June 4, 1923, she was a daughter of the late Michael and Julia Paulin Gavaletz.

She was a member of Ss. Peter and Paul Byzantine Catholic Church, Minersville.

She was a retired seamstress who had worked at numerous factories throughout the area. Susan was well-known for her knitting/crocheting skills. She will be remembered at York Terrace for making a Christmas stocking for every one of her fellow residents and countless lap afghans.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, George, in 1977; brothers, Stephen, Joseph and Michael; and sisters, Julia, Joan, Eleanor, Anna, Betty, Mary and Elsie.

Susan is survived by two daughters, Susan, wife of John Vrabel, Minersville, and Maryann, wife of David Drazenovich, Minersville; a sister, Margaret "Peggy" Brennan, Pottsville; grandchildren, Jeannette and her husband, Michael McKeon, John and his wife, Janice Vrabel, David Drazenovich and Maryann Tellez; great-grandchildren, Kevin McKeon, James and Brian Drazenovich, Kristen and Brandon Tellez; nieces and nephews.

A Divine Liturgy will be celebrated at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at Ss. Peter and Paul Byzantine Catholic Church, Minersville, with the Very Rev. Francis Twardzik S.D.B. officiating. Friends are respectfully invited to attend a visitation from 8:30 to 10 a.m. Tuesday at Mahal-Ritzel Funeral Home Inc., Minersville. There will be no calling hours Monday evening. Interment will be held in Ss. Peter and Paul Byzantine Catholic Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family requests remembrances made in Susan's name to Ss. Peter and Paul Cemetery Fund and will be accepted at the funeral home during visitation. Mahal-Ritzel Funeral Home Inc. Minersville, is entrusted with arrangements.
