Rita Louise Schoener, 72, of Cuba, N.M., a former resident of both Berks and Schuylkill counties passed away May 26 at home.

Born in Hazelton, April 24, 1941, she was a daughter of the late Joseph Edward and Dorothy L. Kocher Schoener.

She was a 1959 graduate of Blue Mountain High School and 1966 graduate of Pottsville Hospital School of Nursing.

Rita was a registered nursing for more than 30 years and retired from Berks Heim in 2001.

After moving to New Mexico, she volunteered her time to the community.

She is survived by brothers, Kenneth Schoener, Mifflin, and David Schoener, husband of Sandy, Orwigsburg; son, Joel Petery, Hampton, Va.; daughter, Jan Petery, Regina, N.M.; and grandson, Jacob Petery, Hampton, Va.

Rita's wish was to be cremated. Her ashes were scattered along the Fisher walking trail overlooking Cuba, N.M., next to a park bench she made and donated to the community. A very loving and giving person, Rita contributed to many charities. Memorial contributions can be made to Veterans of Foreign Wars and Dorothy L. Schoener Memorial Scholarship at Penn State University.
